Just really want to rant and rave! Wanting to emigrate to NZ but don't have enough points because neither me or dh have a skill that they need or want! don't want handouts from them, just want to move there, buy a house and both work, dh full time as some sort of driver (he is a hgv driver here)and me part time in a little cafe, local shop! heard it is such a good place for kids to grow up as they are much more child focused and i think ds will benefit greatly from the move! arrrrrrrrggggggggh

thanks for listening

YANBU to annoyed that you didn't get in. Have you had to spend much money to get as far as you've got. Hope you haven't lost a huge amount.

In a way though, I can see where they are coming from. No country benefits from the mass immigration of an unskilled workforce.

Have you thought about Australia or Canada.

Funnily enough, I really fancy New Zealand too, but we probably won't qualify under the points system either.

HecatesTwopenceworth · 16/04/2009 19:57

Get a skill that they need or want? Is there anything on their list you could qualify in?

qwertpoiuy · 16/04/2009 20:01

I know a Physio who's trying to get a visa for NZ (a skill they want over there), and it's just proving so difficult - she's having one setback after another.
She's been told over and over again she'd have an easier time if she went over as an illegal immigrant!

DLI · 16/04/2009 20:06

had thought about training in a skill they need but known my luck by the time i had qualified it wouldnt be needed anymore! hubby's skill was needed about six months ago so i am hoping that it is needed again in the near future.

Australia is just as hard to get into and Canada is too cold for my liking.

qwertpoiuy - hope your friend gets there in the end

You mentioned working in a cafe. If you have enough money to buy a small business like a cafe, you might be allowed in under some kind of enterprenuerial visa. IE, if you're creating jobs for local people. Would that be an option.

If you have money earmarked for a house, perhaps you could spend that money on a small business instead, rent a house for a while, and then buy a house a couple of years later.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 16/04/2009 20:14

I don't mean to be facetious, but your DH could do a driving job, and you get a job in a cafe or similar, in the highlands of Scotland. Also fabulous for children, and the weather's not much different. Why NZ in particular?

nametaken · 16/04/2009 20:17

cost of living, probably.

DLI · 16/04/2009 20:21

just dont want to be here. NZ good for kids and is warmer than here (although still rains a lot), cost of living is actually higher than here. this country really hasnt got anything going for it - i dont think - at the moment. i have distant family who live in NZ and they love it, wouldn't come back for all the money in the world.

DLI it is a great place for kids to grow up, don't lose heart!!

Keep an eye out on what skills they need all the time, I was talking to a woman the other day, her hubby is taking a short course in plastering (about a week I think), as they want to go to Australia and it is on the 'skills required' list. (Don't go to Aus though, NZ is much better , putting helmet on).

You will also have more luck if you are from any minority group, than if you are the average white couple, with 2 kids. (No flaming please, tis the truth).

Jackstini · 16/04/2009 23:29

My friend is emigrating there shortly - they got in as her dh trained as a butcher!

Tigurr · 17/04/2009 05:09

I don't know about NZ but over here in Australia they're clamping down on immigration and cutting more and more "skills" off the "essential skills list" because they just don't have the jobs to offer over here any more.

Now is really not a good time to be emigrating - Australia has just (in the past couple of months) started to feel the effects of the Global Financial Crisis and it's not looking pretty at all.

nooka · 17/04/2009 05:23

YANBU to be peeved, but most countries use fairly similar systems to make sure they are only getting the immigrants they want. And what they want is highly educated skilled people to fit the gaps in their own workforce. I expect there are plenty of New Zealanders who want similar things to you, and the jobs are being filled without any imports. In truth you are probably better off being stopped at this point rather than spending a lot of money to get out there (emigration is very expensive) and then finding there are no jobs, you can't support yourself and you have to come back to the UK (which also costs lots of money).

We have been in Canada for almost six months now and went the route of finding a job and then getting sponsored to move. If you can do that then in general it is a much safer way to move (and often quicker). Is that an option for NZ?

DuffyFluckling · 17/04/2009 05:34

The reason it's such a great place is surely because they don't let any old Tom, Dick or Harry in?

thirtypence · 17/04/2009 05:49

Could you buy a franchise? That might work for you. KB's bakeries run on a franchise model - maybe contact them and see what they say.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 17/04/2009 06:41

Get divorced and each marry a Kiwi. You'll be in in no time
