To think this isn't a particularly appropriate song for a school concert

My first AIBU!

Hmmm, my dds came home excitedly telling me about the Spring concert they're performing in. Each year will do a different song. DD1 is doing Green Day 'Time of your life' I asked DD2 what her year are doing and she proudly started singing about travelling the world and the seven seas... uh oh.

Great song but a five year old singing "Some of them want to 'buse you, some of them want to be a-bused!"?

YANBU - plenty of other good songs to choose from. I daresay it will completely pass the 5 year olds by, but older children listening might 'get it' (probably not)...still, not v appropriate imo.

cornsilk · 16/04/2009 07:14

Are they going to change the words for that bit?

purepurple · 16/04/2009 07:22

YABU
lots of songs have lyrics like these
you can't sanitise the whole world just so the children arn't offended.(Not that they notice anyway)

My DD's school did a production of the junior version of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, in YR6. It was fantastic. The local 'posh' school, meanwhile, did Romeo and Juliet (yawn)

Can't say I'm warming to the Y6 version of the Rocky Horror show, I'm sure it's not on the National Curriculum.

CarmenSanDiego · 16/04/2009 07:32

Nope they're not changing the words. That was what my dd was actually singing.

Hah, I love Rocky Horror but I wouldn't love my five year old doing it. IMO kids should be doing stuff they understand in school that is age-appropriate, otherwise they might as well put on a performance of Reservoir Dogs

Purepurple do you really think telling a 5 year old child to sing about people wanting to 'be abused' is appropriate whether the child understands it or not?

Romeo and Juliet has its moments

they are just words
I don't think 5 year olds do critical analysis

CarmenSanDiego · 16/04/2009 07:42

Ahhh.. maybe I should go in and ask that they change the class song to 'Smack my bitch up' then. Much catchier tune.

i would not be happy at all

CarmenSanDiego · 16/04/2009 07:59

Hmm, we're moving schools in the summer thankfully as I have a lot of issues with this school so probably not worth doing anything.

I was wondering whether all the other issues had knocked my judgement to make me so irritated by this more minor issue and appreciate the replies as a sanity check. I'm thinking ianbu but will probably just quietly seethe in the school's direction until we can get moved.

isn't this from Annie Lennox, "Sweet Dreams Are Made of This" ?

And I don't think you are BU. dd's school did " I am 16 going on 17" and the lyrics are appaling.

mylifemykids · 16/04/2009 08:09

I was going to say the same as Pan, those lyrics are from that song (which was also sang by Marilyn Manson!!).

The lyrics also include the words 'I'm gonna use you and abuse you'!

Definitely NOT appropiate for a 5 year old.

YANBU
