To be a bit disconcerted in having piss in my handbag?

Does everyone just take it as given that you are expected to take your pee home with you so you can reuse the container?

This is my first pregnancy, am 21 weeks. Last midwife visit, I was given a bottle and told to produce a urine sample. After she finished doing protein and sugar tests, she screwed the cap back on (I'm not sure how well!) and just leaned over and stuck the bottle of piss into the side pocket of my handbag, saying 'now just take that home to empty and wash, and bring it back next time.'

What if it had leaked? Couldn't they at least give you a sealed plastic bag in case? Or better yet, just give you a fresh container?

As it happens, I won't be using that one again. I completely forgot it was in there until three days later. Then took it out and noted that it seemed to have gone all cloudy and frankly a bit chunky. On seeing it, I had to quickly go barf in my kitchen bin (because EVERYTHING still makes me sick), then DH got rid of it for me and threw away the bottle.

The idea of carrying urine around and reusing containers seems awfully unhygienic and gross. Is this just a normal cost-saving measure I was previously unaware of? AIBU if I just ask for a new clean one each time? Should I bring a plastic baggie with me and intercept the midwife so she doesn't put it directly in my handbag?

I was struggling to work out what the 'Cock' referred to!!

MrsMerryHenry · 14/04/2009 23:26

Until I realised you were a Yankee I was pitying your poor DH and wondering whether it would be rude to recommend that you read 'Sex Tips for Girls'!

YanknCock · 14/04/2009 23:26

so that's why the whole pub giggles when our quiz team name is read out!

(Slarty, I'd like to hear it too)

okaaaaaay then,
dh was telling me earlier that at a football match when they were all standing, squashed, he felt somethign warm behind him,
someone was pissing n a can and missed.

and another occasion, someone was pissing in a can and a goal was scored, again football match, and his willy was shredded by the rough edge of the can.
i wondered if it was an urban myth,

nothign to do with urine samples sadly.

MrsMerryHenry · 14/04/2009 23:31

That is so disgusting.

I hope the second pissing man was also the first. Rough justice.

I used to wee in one of those little pots that camera film comes in. They are surprisingly watertight although I did keep it in a little plastic bag. The midwife used to tip it down the sink sometimes.

It had the advantage of not being see through so not too repulsive if you neglected to dispose of it from one appointment to the next.

TBH I found collecting it more revolting than disposing of it - the pot being all warm was more ewwww to me than tipping it away. Not to the point of barfing in the kitchen bin though. ( although much sympathy for hair trigger gag reflex).

YanknCock · 14/04/2009 23:32

Rest assured, if I ever do piss in my handbag, purposefully or otherwise, you all will be the first to know.

And the thread title will be clear on that fact!

Whatever you do, please don't change your name!

On a practical note, why are urine specimen containers so small? I'm getting better at hitting it, but am at a distinct disadvantage as I grew up in a place with 2 inch wide urine pots! (Everything is big in America)

I assume everyone over here is used to it and never pees on their hand?

OP posts:
MrsMerryHenry · 14/04/2009 23:39

Um...I can't say I've ever peed on my hand, no.

Maybe the big specimen thing in the US is down to a more wasteful attitude to resources? I know that sounds very critical, but theres's probably some truth in it.

YanknCock · 14/04/2009 23:42

Could be....but then I've seen sputum pots over here and they're about the same size as U.S. urine pots. Perhaps the urinators could just swap with the spitters? Surely a gob of spit can be more easily aimed?

. . .and really, I'm getting much better with practice. My problem now is more that I forget I only need a small sample to fill it. . .big American urine pots hold a lot more and I was forever not producing 'enough' when I lived over there!

I was always forgetting to empty out the urine tubes when I got home. They often stayed in my handbag for a few days . I have a big handbag, frankly I could lose an elephant in there.

yank I used to pee in a disposable plastic cup then pour it into the tube so I didn't pee on my hand.

Mummy2LZ · 15/04/2009 21:25

I too have peed on my own hand!!
You just cant always get the angle right when you cant see down there and havn't been able to for a couple of months without the aid of a mirror!

I think swapping sputum pots for pee pots is a great idea.
