Brief history..used best friends sperm and syringe..did positive pregnancy test. Then had huge bleed, cramps etc..presumed mc.Following month slept with ex partner..got pregnant.Everyone says my ds looks like best friend.Ex says ds doesnt resemble himself.Mum keeps telling me to have a dna test as ds is the spit of bfSurely he couldnt possibly be best friends.Had early scan which almost certainly matches with ex.Help.

Skidded - see my link around midnight.

This industry/service is not regulated at all. I would not trust an ebay "kit".

Check out the link. This is a reputable company - their services are used by various industrial applications - and their services are used by the police service for forensics.

You may as well throw £100 down the drain with the ebay tests - they won't be much more conclusive that you saying he looks like whoever.

If you're trying to get maintenace money from your ex then he may well insist on a DNA test, but I would say that if it's 4 weeks or more between the two insemination incidents then the doctors would have been able to tell the difference by how far along your pregnancy was.

When did you have the early scan? If there is a month difference between the two potential conception dates then I would probably trust the scan date. The difference on a scan between a 6 week and 10 week baby or 12 and 16 is noticable.

DisasterEggs · 14/04/2009 10:16

what difference would the results make? would it mean different maintainence? different visiting? someone who wants to be a father missing out? someone who doesn't want to be a father being forced to be one? support or not?
or would it make no difference at all?
I think you have to really think about what you are going to do with the results before you test anything.

FWIW I also agree about the EDDs.

Lets assume that you did fully miscarry the first child - and therefore all scans were based on the assumption conception was with your DP.

If you went for a 12wk dating scan. The baby would be about 5-6cm long. If you were still pg from the syringe you would actually have been 16wks pg at this scan the fietus would be more like 12cm long. That is a BIG difference at this stage and as a result your EDD would have reflected the difference. We are not talking about the time at which the baby was born - but the size based on scan measurements and whether that scan reflects the size of a foetus that is 12 wks or 16wks (for example).

TBH I think that if people know that you had attempted insemmination with bf sperm then their eyes may be seeing things that aren't there IYSWIM.

Thanks Tigger and Slightly, that's what I was trying to say. Having had regular scans all through pregnancy I know how much a baby can vary even from week to week at some points. Tink was born at 31 weeks and Fifi at 35 weeks, both similar sizes (Tink was taller than Fifi and not much lighter) and even at that stage there is a massive difference between babies. My sister was born at 44 weeks because there was debate whether she was so far gone (5 week scan proved she really was 44 weeks) and again you can tell a postmature baby.
