to think some people have gone totally over the top with eggs and 'Easter presents' this year?

Shitemum · 12/04/2009 22:10

I am feeling a bit non-plussed.
What's with the Easter presents and the 50 million chocolate eggs and the long, long run-up to Easter where people were scoffing their choc egg stash and replacing it several times over?

Where is your restraint you people?
Has Easter become another excuse to get into debt? It's not xmas ffs!
Haven't you all noticed there's a recession on? Or a depression or whatever they want us to call it...

What's wrong with boiling and decorating some hen's eggs, rolling them down a hill ON EASTER SUNDAY and eating them? Or maybe giving one small choc egg to each of your children/nieces and nephews/grandchildren also ON EASTER SUNDAY.

Rant over.

I am not going to flame you, just ask why you care so much how other people spend their own money?

hester · 12/04/2009 22:16

Because it raises the ante (and pester power) for the rest of us?

I agree with you, Shitemum! Let the fightback begin!

Hulababy · 12/04/2009 22:17

Why does it bother you what others chose to do for their children and with their money? The recession or credit crunch affects people in different ways, and to different amounts. YABU.My DD ends up with plenty simply as she is the only grandchild and niece on one side, and only one of two on the other side and they like to buy for her too. We requested no chocolate as much as possible as knew she had some coming from a sleepover with friends, so she got other stuff instead.

Shitemum · 12/04/2009 22:23

Tee2072 - It just seems like people are letting themsleves be convinced that they need to spend lots of money and consume lots of chocolate just because it's Easter.
what's next - Guy Fawkes presents?

It just seems over the top and a little crazy.

hester - I am worried about pester power as we are moving back to the UK soon after a very long absence and the AMOUNT of sweets and chocolate and stuff to buy in general that is in your face everywhere you go there is un-nerving. I dread having to constantly say 'no' to my DDs when they say 'but everyone else blabla'

Sorry, maybe I'm just used to being low-key and frugal...

Move next door to me and we can dish out cabbage leaves together

Tee2072 · 12/04/2009 22:27

And now my next question: why are you dreading parenting your child? So you have to say no when the 'rest of the world' is saying yes? So what?

And for the record, no everyone is being affected by the credit crunch.

BlueJellie · 12/04/2009 22:28

My ds is the first grandchild on both sides and recieved lots of pressies and eggs - he is 7 months old! Needless to say me and DP scoffed all the eggs but the pressies were very much appreciated :-)

piscesmoon · 12/04/2009 22:29

I have never been one to be moved by the 'everyone else is...' argument. There seemed to be cheap offers on them this year.

Seona1973 · 12/04/2009 22:30

we did decorate boiled eggs (not today though - it was last week at my sisters house with mine and her kids). My lo's both got an small egg from us (one with a ben 10 torch and the other with a small barbie cat toy) and an egg each from my sister. Their great gran sent a £5 between them to get them something and the in-laws sent a couple of tops each. We dont really go overboard at easter and it seems a bit crazy that others spend a fortune at this time.

sleeplessinstretford · 12/04/2009 22:33

we are being affected by the credit crunch-i could really have done without having to rush round finding sodding eggs for 6 kids (who are friends children)who arrived with eggs yesterday for mine-we used to get an easter egg off our grandparents and our parents-we've had fucking cards, presents, eggs from people who are friends but you then have to reciprocate and i was hoping to spend this weekend eating and drinking at home and not rummaging round supermarkets looking for eggs and then going on an easter day egg delivery run...it's just unnecessary-as is fucking halloween but got months to sulk about that yet...

twinklytoes · 12/04/2009 22:38

I'd like dh to own up to eating the eggs that need to be given to our niece and nephew tomorrow. doubt they'll be happy with the postman pat ones I had to replace them with from the petrol station - they are 9 and 11

TitsalinaBumsquash · 12/04/2009 23:00

I treat my children probably to often in your opinion i guess by reading your post OP, but i grew up in poverty and it was shit, i promised myself me or my kids wouldn't live like that. They are far from spoilt though.

sleeplessinstretford · 12/04/2009 23:04

i've treated my own-i just cba treating everyone elses...we've spent nearly £30 and a day buying/delivering the fucking things...gah!

gagamama · 12/04/2009 23:17

I don't know, Easter eggs line the shelves as soon as the Christmas stuff is cleared. I guess this year with Easter falling in mid-April (which isn't that late, but not as early as last year) there has just been a bigger run-up and thus build-up.

GossipMonger · 12/04/2009 23:20

and Easter presents!!

what is that all about?

Mental.

mrsmaidamess · 12/04/2009 23:20

I heard Easter fireworks going off here earlier.

juneybean · 12/04/2009 23:43

I thought in order to get out of the recession we need to spend more?

NotPlayingAnyMore · 12/04/2009 23:56

How does that work though, juneybean? No-one gets out of debt by spending more!
I noticed the eggs becoming available as soon as the New Year came in as well and also agree that the emphasis on it has become ridiculous now.

Many Christians, however, think that anyone buying Easter eggs at all to celebrate the crucifixion and ressurection of Jesus is going over the top!
In turn, many pagans think the Christians are going over the top by nicking their spring equinox festival of Ostara!

So YA all BU

juneybean · 13/04/2009 00:03

I dunno lol sure I heard that somewhere!! Something about putting money into society I know nothing!!!

Gunnerbean · 13/04/2009 00:19

Mine had one small egg (one that was a three for two offer, others went to relatives) and a packed of mini Easter eggs which I hid around the garden for fun. Nothing else, and no going over the top here but just because there's a "credit crunch" in full swing doesn't mean my child can't have a bit of chocolate which cost about 1.50 in total and some fun and nice memories.

elfinblast · 13/04/2009 01:53

I don't mind an easter egg or two but I was in the supermarket a couple of weeks ago and saw loads of signs for "Easter gifts"

As I said to my companion....Give it a few years and Easter is going to be like f'in Christmas.

Easter fireworks (looks for shaky head emoticon)

Alambil · 13/04/2009 02:16

What's wrong with Easter fireworks?

For some people, this religious day is a real celebration and some people use fireworks in their celebrations

Do you complain when you hear fireworks going off at Diwali too?

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 13/04/2009 08:16

YANBU - just another way for retailers to guilt/pressure people into spending lots of money. I didn't often get an easter egg when I was a kid so I don't really care about easter. Easter gifts? pah. I know it doesn't matter how other people spend their money but if people start buying easter gifts and eggs all over the place others will feel they have to recipsocate and it will just get silly.

mumof2andabit · 13/04/2009 08:29

Our kids got eggs and eggs alone. And plenty more than they need at that - they are only 3&1 tho lol

flightoftheeasterbunyip · 13/04/2009 08:36

Shitemum, I think you're being OTT.

i have seen no evidence of what you describe, apart from the bit where you have to replace the stash but I do that every year, simply because I like that particular cheapo chocolate and tend to consume any that's in the house...restraint is a problem for me!

But I got my boys each a tiny egg with a character eggcup, plus I did an egg hunt in the garden for ds1 with some mini foil eggs and clues, which he adored and so did I.

I got a larger egg for each of them, which my parents gave them - with ladybird books in for ds2

They were very cheap and I think one each from everyone who wants to give them a treat is fine. I've rationed the actual chocolate of course as it has an effect on tempers!

You might have missed that this year, eggs have been really really cheap, like a pound for a really large one, in a lot of places - which might mean some people have bought more.

I used to paint real eggs as a child and loved it, but my boys are too small for that yet.
