Am starting to feel a bit trigger happy with the phonecalls to my local police station but...

In the last 2 months I'v emade 2 calls to the police where other may not have done but do you think IABU?

Today was the second occasion.

Driving back from shops with 3 DC in tow, me pregnant and hormonally charged.

Coming along a narrow section of road with parked cars where I am usually very gracious and hold back in the passing places. However, I'd gone along a long line where I was at the point of no return when a car comes zooming up at me - he hadn't even reached the row of cars and still was in the 'dual' bit of road so could have stopped (I'd have had to reverse). AS a result of this 'drive me off the road' attitude, the driver hit my wing mirror and his own. He stopped (I already had) and wound wown window to bash the rear window of my car and start swearing at me.

DS age 5 begins crying so we drive on a few yards and pull over, but the other driver gets out of his car and walks towards us remonstrating so I decide to drive on a bit in order to feel safe.

By this point I'm shaken up and crying so decide to phone police and report.

I had noted the reg from when we first stopped so gave it to the Police.

I feel quite pathetic as I am used to London driving and driving abroad but this really shook me up.

Stupid twunt was probably barely 20, along with his mate in passenger seat.

brimfull · 11/04/2009 17:21

Bloody hell that's awful .
Bastard -what did the police say?

TinkerBellesMumandFiFi2 · 11/04/2009 17:21

YANBU, I would have called the police too.

Shambolic · 11/04/2009 17:29

hobbgoblin not OTT to call the police and hopefully it made you feel a bit better about a dreadful experience.

I would be extremely interested to hear what the police say/do, as a fellow Londonder IME they aren't terribly interested in this sort of stuff.

You were right to report it though, and I would be very happy to hear that they take it seriously.

MuffinBaker · 11/04/2009 17:30

YADNBU

Are you okay?

What did the police say?

DuffyFluckling · 11/04/2009 17:31

YANBU at all. What a crappy way to behave.

theDreadPirateRabbits · 11/04/2009 17:32

Not OTT, and I hope you get taken seriously. Hope you feel better soon - would normally prescribe a large glass of gin wine, but maybe a good sofa snuggle with DCs instead?

LadyOfScoffleTheEasterEggs · 11/04/2009 17:35

NOT OTT! Blimey - are you OK? When I was pregnant with DS1 someone nearly ran DH off the road, then went down the road we were going down. He stopped, so DH did and he grabbed a baseball bat out of the car and swung for DH first (luckily he saw it quicly and got into the car) then smashed in my rear window. Some people are just hooligans. I hope they are doing something about it - I never heard back from the Police again, but I didn't have a reg. {{hugs}}

1istrulyscrumptious · 11/04/2009 17:35

call the police if you ever feel unsafe or threatened, i do...if there was more of them around then these things might not happen. i find myself calling for all sorts of reasons.. dont feel silly they need to know about all the w**nkers out there.

hobbgoblin · 11/04/2009 17:35

Police said they'd report it to the dangerous driving unit or something. The woman who took the call was very understanding, and also said that they would pull the vehicle over if spotted this driving later today.

I wish there was a guaranteed way of making sure idiots get their commeuppance in situations like this. It is clearly unreasonable to behave in this way when driving but made even worse by the fact that I was a lone female with small children in the car who were clearly terrified.

I can take and join in with beeping and v signing where appropriate (probably never, but as I said I'm used to London and city driving abroad) but I think this was a step too far.

Whether it needed reporting to the police I don't know, but what else can you do to try and make sure people learn from their mistakes.

Somebody else could have been even more upset by what happened and maybe even had an accident themselves as a result of being too upset to drive.

LadyofScoffle that is horrendous. How awful.

I'm sure the police care about this kind of thing but I suspect they lack the manpower to do much about it unless there is major damage or injury. Shame, because it is this reality that allows individuals to think they can get away with it I expect.

You did well Hobbgoblin. Not only unsafe driving but aggressive attitude. Strange how often they are seen together.

Who else is going to report them if you don't?

Also, here's a cautionary tale (edited, so I hope it makes sense): We were in the car with the dc and were rammed by another car. We didn't 'phone the police, but swapped numbers. Rather foolishly, we thought they (it was a family) had been arguing, were a bit wound up and deserved the benefit of the doubt. We also assumed that the incident would be on CCTV.

Next we knew, they were (we are sure it was them), 'phoning dh, pretending to be a hospital, saying I was in intensive car, having been in an accident. They made several of these calls to dh, while he was at work.

They put in an insurance claim, for a vast sum, at which point we discovered that we couldn't get hold of the CCTV now (hadn't involved police early enough and film destroyed).

It wasn't nice. Our insurance company paid out. We felt too silly to pursue the nuisance calls (and in hindsight, that was a mistake). They clearly saw the fact that we swapped numbers and didn't involve the police as a complete green light. Next time, I will definitely call the police.

theDreadPirateRabbits · 11/04/2009 17:47

Cherryblossoms - I always make sure there's a camera of some kind in the car, even if just the one on my phone, so if it comes to it I can prove there weren't 3 passengers to get whiplash etc - it's a whole industry these days...

cherryblossoms · 11/04/2009 17:49

Ladyof Scoffle - that is awful.

Why are some people like that?

Do you know, I sat my theory test for driving a while back, and there was a girl there, who had, presumably, just taken the test and failed.

She was there with two friends and they were all screaming abuse at the receptionists. She was leaning across the desk and waving her fist in the face of one receptionist, who was looking terrified, leaning out of the way and telling her that it wasn't her fault and she was going to call the police.

I did think that there was one person who really, truly shouldn't be allowed possession of a large, heavy, fast lump of metal.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a "politeness" and "non-aggressive" part to the theory test? Or maybe that should be part of the practical?

1istrulyscrumptious · 11/04/2009 17:51

had an crash in dec... man drove into me and wrote off my car. gave ne a bad back for 3 weeks over xmas.. he told me not to call the police as it wasnt serious enough.. then he drove off.. luckily i did get his address and reg.. and i called the police.. they went to his house and confirmed the accident. if i hadnt called the police i would have recieved no compensation. The police told me to always call no matter how minor.. you need that crime ref if nothing else.

oopsagain · 11/04/2009 17:55

i called the olice when we were jit by another motorist.

Didn't help- they couldn't do anything with no witnesses.
Even the skid marks down the road on his side were of no use as they don't know how fresh they were.
The man was ok, but he still said it was our fault and the insurance companies agreed an equal blame to us both.
I was furious

Simplyme · 11/04/2009 18:06

Poor you!! YANBU! I just hope the police actually do something!

theDreadPirateRabbits · 11/04/2009 18:52

Can I repeat - ALWAYS TAKE PHOTOS - if you can without aggravating a threatening situation.

MrsMagooo · 11/04/2009 18:55

YANBU!! I would have contacted the police too.

Hope you & DC aren't to shaken.
