to expect GP's receptionist to be tactful?

Called GP's surgery last week to get result of pg blood test. Receptionist gaily told me that I wasn't pg and added "is that good news?".

Surely if you are giving out a result and you feel you need to comment you should just ask "is that what you were hoping for?" and then congratulate/commiserate (if you must) rather than making an assumption that you know what the patient would want the result to be.

At other times in my life it might have been good news but at the moment it was the worst possible news and her chirpy assumption that it was good news was distressing.

The sooner receptionists get phased out the better.

YANBU, cheeky mare .

One receptionistgot very annoyed with me when, having booked myself in using the fancy new self-check-in machine, I refused to answer her shouts of "who are you here to see love" until I had crossed the waiting room and was standing close enough to say "the midwife and I'd rather that the entire district didn't know at this point, thanks." Cue much hurrumphing .
