To be a bit disappointed with my GP

I was very very overweight.

I started a programme called Lighter Life - it s a tough regime of Very Low Calorie Dieting, Complete food replacement and counselling.

I've lost 7.5 stone.

I am now in the "Healthy" range for my BMI.

I've not seen my GP since I started - we always have had a fab relationship.

I went to see her today....she was not impressed - she was warning me preofusely about the dangers of yoyo dieting and "putting it all back on"....

I'm sad...I had really looked forward to going to see her to get a bit of a pat on the back..!!! 9I was going for a medical reason too, not just for a pat on the back)

There are pics of me about a stone ago in my profile - I;ve lost a bit more since then.

blimey!she was bound to be shocked and wouldnt be doing her job if she didnt warn you of dangers.
the pictures are amazing!-well done you!you look stunning

LadyOfScoffleTheEasterEggs · 06/04/2009 12:15

Oh well done you! Maybe she was jealous

paranoidmother · 06/04/2009 12:17

Hmm not sure if you're BU but I do think this is something the doctor should have said a while back and now should be discussing with you how you are planning on keeping the weight off, not yoyo dieting. Not the sort of thing you need to here when you have been trying so very hard to get the weight off. How long did it take you to lose the weight?

Sounds as though it has worked and well done to you. I'll give you a pat on the back. Hope you manage to keep it off.

mrsblanc · 06/04/2009 12:17

very well done to you.
Did you find it a struggle?

MitchyInge · 06/04/2009 12:17

yanbu, she may not approve of this particular method but her energies would be better spent supporting you to maintain your new, healthy size

WELL DONE!

paranoidmother · 06/04/2009 12:18

By the way just looked at pictures and you look fabulous.

Sassybeast · 06/04/2009 12:18

Brilliant work on your weight loss but am slightly confused as you are supposed to be under close medical supervision with lighter life because it IS so extreme and can have dramatic effects on your cardiac system, blood pressure etc. You are also massively at risk of developing gallstone if you lose weight so rapidly. I always assumed that it was your own GP who did this medical supervision?

Bathsheba · 06/04/2009 12:20

Thank you everyone - I had to get her approvla to start it - so when I was 17.5 stone she was happy to okay the programme because I was doing something that had a chance of succeeding...and that was more than I was doing before...

Its taken me since July 1008 to lose it.

cheesesarnie · 06/04/2009 12:21

july 1008? your ancient!

stickylittlefingers · 06/04/2009 12:23

You have done brilliantly, and YANBU to think the GP should have been pleased, tho YABU to think that this wouldn't be balanced by some concern - she obviously didn't get this balance right, but Sassybeast has pointed out the health risks (obviously balanced by the health risks of staying overweight!).

So - Pats on the Back all round and hope are enjoying yourself and feeling great!

LIZS · 06/04/2009 12:26

Well done on persevering but I wonder if she felt you had taken it to extremes - 7.5 stone is a lot and maybe she has seen others do this then put it on again when trying to establish a normal eating regime. Hesitate to bring it up but I wonder if your need to do this has had an impact on your family life, as per your other thread.

Bathsheba · 06/04/2009 12:27

\I am very very old cheesesarnie..well spotted..!!!!!!!

CatchaStar · 06/04/2009 12:27

Well done!

What mitchy said. She had to tell you about risks etc but she should probably have gone about explaining it all to you in a more positive way.

Yes she has to do her job, but there is no harm in telling somebody that they're doing extremely well.

So, You look fab!

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 06/04/2009 12:34

YANBU but I can see where your GP is coming from, just think she didn't quite word it how she should. There is evidence that some women put back all the weight they lose after extreme diets. A slight pat on the back would have been nice from her.

Very Bloody Well Done you for such an amazing weight loss, looked at the photos, astonishing! You must be so proud and thrilled.

And you don't look bad for someone who's over 1000 years old

Bathsheba · 06/04/2009 12:35

Hi

Well yes, my relationship with my DH has a lot to do with this - I piled on weight (I was always overweight but I did pile a lot on) because I was so miserable over the last 4 years - he ahs had quite severe mental health problems which he is only beginning to recover from. Essentially this meant I was in a very emtionally abusive relationship with him - despite the fact he was ill and couldn't help it, it was still very difficult.

I comfort ate and drank a lot.

it also explains why I need to plan meals quite so much - I don't get to eat at all and, while Ic an cook and bake etc, I try not to spend too much time thinking about food - so I plan meals very much in advance rather than spending all day wondering what I can make for dinner.

Bathsheba think you look fantastic. My sister did a similar diet and did struggle to keep it off when she started eating again so maybe you GP was just trying to warn you of the dangers but not really going the right way about it.

See in your profile you're in Aberdeen. Me too (well as of yesterday lol) I grew up here then left about 11 years ago and for various reasons I have come back officially moved yesterday
