shes 22 months now, and i'm feeling for aware that some of the songs we like singing to/listen to are perhaps the best things to play to children.

however we like it.

Is it that RnB stuff with swearing?

I must admit, it's a bit of a bug bear of mine when I'm out with DD and we hear swearing blasting out from car stereos.......Or even in our own garden for that matter.

hotcrosspurepurple · 04/04/2009 15:19

don't worry about it
there is no such thing as "child friendly"
it's a myth
listen to what you like
children live in the same world as adults and we shouldn't have to do things differently
My kids grew up listening to a lot of punk/goth/hardcore etc with swearing and haven't turned out too badly
my DD used to say "bleep" when someone said a swearword in a song

JeanPoole · 04/04/2009 15:21

awwww at your dd saying bleep.

thats a good idea, i will try that

Agree with purple.

hotcrosspurepurple · 04/04/2009 15:27

I took my DD when she was 10 to an all day punk festival, she heard plenty of choice words that day!
but there were lots of kids there, they even had a bouncy castle and face painting for them
there are worse things than hearing a few swear words
you could be listening to Cliff Richard for god sake

daisydora · 04/04/2009 15:31

Your DD lets you listen to your music? Don't worry enjoy while it lasts.

Bloody hell, we get a few notes into a song and my DD runs screaming through the house shouting "my music on, my music on"
Last year we spent a 6 hour car journey listening to the same CD over and over...you can only listen to Dingle Dangle scarecrow so many times you know

memoo · 04/04/2009 15:37

my DC listen to all kinds of stuff thats not exactly child friendly.

DS's favorite at the mo is Folsam prison blues by johny cash, contains lines like "I shot a man in reno to just to watch him die" DS knows all the words, and always asks for it on when we're in the car

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 04/04/2009 16:07

I used to play 50's rock'n'roll when my DCs were younger - DS2 (18yo) is now a big fan of Little Richard. To the point that he wanted to name his child Molly (after "Good Golly Miss Molly") if it's a girl.

nomoreamover · 04/04/2009 16:08

LOL - Kiss 100 all the way in our house! - I like the R&B and Garage type music and so do my children but I make sure its on the radio rather than the CD version as then I know the radio will block out the most offensive words and I can relax on the dancing round the lounge with my kids instead!!!

solidgoldshaggingbunnies · 04/04/2009 16:09

Another vote for exposing DC to good music and not being pissy over expletives. DS hears enough swearing on the trams as it is (we live in Croydon and often share a tramride to the park with hordes of teens yelling a choice selection of rude words at each other).
DS fave song currently is Hammersmith Palais by Demolition 23 (proud emoticon).

stickylittlefingers · 04/04/2009 16:16

Both our dds are little rock chicks! I couldn't possibly be expected to drive and listen to the dingle dangle scarecrow - cruel and unusual punishment!

MillyR · 04/04/2009 16:25

I think children should be exposed to a wide range of music; mine have grown up on psychedelia.

MANATEEequineOHARA · 04/04/2009 16:26

I think all music is good! My kids fave is the soundtrack to Moulin Rouge

JeanPoole · 04/04/2009 17:01

oh good ianbu

yanbu
dd used to love eminem and even with severe cp she could danc eto it.
we are now onto HSM and metal though which is better

Acinonyx · 04/04/2009 18:29

I have a mixed CD in the car and dd's favourite at the moment is 'I love you so much batter when you're naked' - she asks for it over and over. She's 3

Acinonyx · 04/04/2009 18:30

better, even....

Littlepurpleprincess · 04/04/2009 18:33

I don't believe in too much censorship. If your child hears something like swearing you can use it as a talking point, to bring up the "why we don't swear at people" subject. They will hear it at secondary school anyway.

Ps, My son loves 'Gives You Hell' by the All American Rejects. Is that inappropriate. I don't think the subject is but maybe the langauge is. I dunno.

lou33 · 04/04/2009 18:38

i have never listened to kids songs in the car or round the house

they are going to hear that and much worse out and about as they grow up

i tell them i have no problem with them listening to it but i dont expect to be hearing those words coming form them

it's worked so far

one of ds2's favourite songs is mobscene by marilyn manson, he used to cry if i didnt put it on repeat

cupofteaplease · 04/04/2009 18:38

I don't know if anyone has the latest Lily Allen album, but there is a great, upbeat song on there with some 'interesting' lyrics. When we play it in the car I have to sing very loudy 'THANK you, THANK you very very much!' etc to cover up the true lyrics (I'm sure you can guess?!). Luckily the girls haven't caught on yet!!

lou33 · 04/04/2009 18:39

lol i heard that the other day

solidgoldshaggingbunnies · 04/04/2009 18:41

I would much rather my DS listened to So What by the Anti-Nowhere League than High School Fucking Musical. I hate HSM because it is so UNmusical, the songs all sound like a mishmash of Steps out-takes - music as purely and siimply a merchandising device.

lou33 · 04/04/2009 18:45

anti nowhere league ,theres a blast from the past

Littlepurpleprincess · 04/04/2009 18:53

I always feel a bit hypacritical (sp?) because I hate DS listening to any kind of R&B or Hip Hop (basically anything in the charts right now) because of the terrible way music these days portrays relationships (eg, pussycat sluts) but then I say I am always open minded and don't believe in censorship and he watches Kerrang! all the time. I guess I just hope he grows up liking what me and DP like. And having a true appriciation of music (i.e. knowing that rap, is crap).

solidgoldshaggingbunnies you are so right, Zac Efron should be shot.
