To think that Drayton Manor should have a good food selection?

Went there today with DS and DH. The park itself is great and DS loved Thomas Land

However, when it came to lunch time, I was dismayed to see the appalling lack of choice in the food places. We looked into a few before deciding on the Rainforest Pizza place - was over priced, pizza like cardboard, jacket pototoes with value style rubbery cheese and cheap cash and carry style coleslaw

I didn't see any childrens packs, no fruit juices (only fruit shoots!), no fresh fruit, milk or any of the things you would expect to see in such a large place as this! I was disgusted quite frankly!

Sounds like typical "attraction food" - bland and bleurgh!

Thunderduck · 02/04/2009 21:54

I can't say I associate fresh fruit with theme parks.

Hulababy · 02/04/2009 21:56

Typical theme park fodder by sounds of it. They are notorousy quite bad for food seection.

nametaken · 02/04/2009 21:57

You're right, the quality of food that theme parks offer their customers is discusting.

I have to say I was at Alton Towers last year and I noticed that they have gone the franchise way, ie, they have brought in Starbucks, chiquittas etc etc. And one of those posh sandwich places.

It was an improvement on the usual awful fare - at least with a chain you know what your getting.

InTheScrum · 02/04/2009 21:57

But Thunderduck, most places that feed children show some willing in the "healthy options" for children.
No big parks around here, but all the attractions (zoo, farms, playparks etc) with restaurants have fruit, juices and milk.
Did you complain/comment PussinJimmy's?

PussinJimmyChoos · 02/04/2009 22:01

Only got back a few hours ago...thought I would rant on mnet first but will certainly complain

I normally take fruit with me on day trips but this time I thought ok, I'll just buy what I need in the park...not that it will hurt DS to have had one crappy lunch but I still would have liked to have seen kids packs etc. Also, some attention to allergies as well. Not that DS has any but I know lots of children do - its madness that places like this can get away with selling such overpriced crap

Thunderduck · 02/04/2009 22:03

I'd expect it of smaller attractions but I'd never expect to see a glimpse of an apple at a large theme park.
Not that I'm saying they shouldn't offer fruit as an option.

PussinJimmyChoos · 02/04/2009 22:44

I find it weird as there would be a big demand for it. As for the parents, the Thomas land has a cafe there and I was hoping for a nice cake selection - I mean the theme does lend itself quite nicely to a cream tea place, but all they had was oversweet fruit cake and shitty 'chocolate flavoured' covered flapjacks...wtf?!!

I always fill in a comment card at these kinds of places. Unless it's completely crap, I always put a nice comment first before I put my complaint. We've had a few free days out from my comment cards, including a free trip to the zoo as a "mystery shopper" with £20 spending money for the activities and the shop!

feedthegoat · 02/04/2009 22:49

So I wasn't completely stupid to sit and eat my picnic in the rain when we went to Thomasland then....

PussinJimmyChoos · 02/04/2009 22:51

I didn't see any comment cards...I just complained sort of loudly in the food place...in fact, if you were in Drayton Manor today, you may have seen a peeved mother sat in the cafe hissing to her DH "have you seen the fruit shoots and "I'm gonna review this place on mumsnet as soon as we get back"....

Was keeping an eye out for this thread Puss

I agree, most theme-park-type places have shit food. DD2 has a restricted diet so we always end up taking a picnic when we go out as we can't rely on being able to buy healthy options for her.

If you see a family struggling round Paultons Park with 47 gallons of water and half an orchard's worth of fruit give me a wave...

PussinJimmyChoos · 02/04/2009 22:56

Oh yes and I text ranted to Sidge on the way home

Sidge · 02/04/2009 23:05

Puss was a woman in need of a rant!

Yurtgirl · 02/04/2009 23:07

I wouldnt risk it - take a picnic and save a fortune next time

PussinJimmyChoos · 02/04/2009 23:14

Yes, the credit crunch, Nigella side of me thinks yay...do a picnic...but..I'm just not a picnic gal, unless someone else does all of it and I just sit there being fed

DH doesn't cook - I view my day trips as a break from cooking...not a visit to Chicken Nugget central...

OP posts:
Yurtgirl · 02/04/2009 23:22

Wow fancy Nigella style picnic that would never occur to me I was thinking sandwiches, fruit and cake! With ice cream purchased at venue

I confess we had a fabulous free time playing hide and seek at a hilltop folly today!......... and then went to McDonalds!

Yum! kids were sooooooo excited as we go there so rarely its a real treat
