to think that Thorpe Park's new 'Saw' themed ride is inappropriate and gimmicky?

So the Saw horror film franchise has been very successful, but am I alone in thinking that it is wholly inappropriate for a family theme park to have a ride themed around a cert. 18 horror film, and then promote that ride as being suitable for over 12s?

I haven't seen any of the Saw films myself as I don't understand the appeal of the 'torture-and-gore' genre, but I am aware of the general content and to be honest, that Thorpe Park has such as ride really puts me off. But then I have always thought it inferior to Alton Towers anyway... and this seems to be a bit of a desperate attempt to do something 'different' to compete, imo. AIBU to write to Alton Towers and let them know that I think their Saw ride is just a bit, well, wrong?

(N.B. this will probably be a hypothetical letter to Thorpe Park, as I do have better things to do with my time such as, um, Mumsnet. But the principle of the thing, etc...)

but you'd get to fantasisse about bardem (is that his name? I never remember)

that'd be great pointy!

i did think the saw ride was a bit weird sounding.

love an exorcist ride.

'Brokeback Mountain' does sound like a ride, but I'm fairly sure it wouldn't be much of a thrill ride.

It would be a carriage going r-e-a-l-l-y s-l-o-w-l-y between some mountains while a couple of cowboys stare at each other.

DSMaryMagdalene · 03/04/2009 18:03

Have any of you actually seen the saw movies?

Torture Porn?
Essentially a series of acts of sadism strung together?
Lowest common denominator?

The saw series are actually really clever films, psychological horror movies.

Whilst I am not disputing the appropriateness of a saw themed ride (I don't see why not, to be honest, I don't care) I do think that some of the 'opinions' on the films are laughable at best, ignorant at worst.

KayHarkerIsPlayingWithMitchell · 03/04/2009 18:33

I couldn't give a flying arse how 'clever' they are - they're rated for adults for a reason.

Personally I can't imagine a worse way of spending a few hours than watching people simulate real suffering and dying in horrible ways. Takes all sorts, though.

DSMaryMagdalene · 03/04/2009 18:35

Oh, totally agree that it takes all sorts. For the life of me I cannot imagine why someone would want to waste two hours watching a couple of people pretend to fall in love, as per the chick flick genre, but hey ho.

Anyway, the films are rated for adults. This is a ride. Unless there is a screening of the movie before it takes off, I wouldn't be bothered about letting over 12's on it.

No interest in Saw movies, but love the idea of extra scary rollercoaster. Sorry, YABU. Like others have said, not every ride has to be suitable for all the family at a family theme park.

KayHarkerIsPlayingWithMitchell · 03/04/2009 18:41

lol, well, I'm not really a chick flick girl either

It doesn't have to be appropriate for 'all the family', and I'm fine with scary thrill rides. I just think linking something that is most definitely inappropriate for 12 year olds with a ride that supposedly is, is over the line. I'm sure they won't show the films, but that's not the point - the whole ride is a promotional item for them.

Thorpe Park is my local theme park (cycling distance for my DSs), and I wouldn't say that it was a family theme park. We have Legoland for that. Thorpe Park is for teens and twenty-somethings.
