Speech Impediment

deste · 01/04/2009 17:31

Am I being unreasonable to expect radio announcers and newsreaders to not have a speech impediment. Before anyone says anything about equal opportunities etc you wouldn't give someone with no arms a job bricklaying so why do we need to listen to that. I have to switch the news off as it grates so mutch. Egsample, Inverurie sounds as it is spelt becomes Invewoowie.

Yes YABU

SlebMner · 01/04/2009 17:51

YABU

society is not made up off impediment free, perfect sounding and looking people and that should be represented in the media

though it barely is

SlebMner · 01/04/2009 17:51

of, not off!

TotalChaos · 01/04/2009 17:57

bigot.

FAQinglovely · 01/04/2009 18:00

oh god - lets go back to the days of when the only "voices" heard on the radio and tv were of the same poncey type shall we????

seeker · 01/04/2009 18:05
DoThisDoThat · 01/04/2009 18:05

Not really. I can't listen to Dee Sebastien on the World Service. It's bloody annoying.

Just to be a pedant, though, it's "example" not "egsample".

mummyloveslucy · 01/04/2009 18:07

"So why do we need to listen to that" ???

You are so rude. Think yourself lucky you don't have a speech problem. I'm sure you say or do things that great on other people too.

PeachyLikesHerChoccyRabbit · 01/04/2009 18:09

YABU and you are being horrible

A ddisabled person with missing limbs couldn't actively do the bricklaying job; a person with a speech impediment might slightly annoy one or two prats.

Not that am defensive on this (son with SLI) but I wonder what job he should do- something locked away perhaps in an office where nobody might be forced to hear him?

Shambolic · 01/04/2009 18:10

I thought "egsample" was an example of the impediment

If the person is still easy to understand ie the impediment doesn't interfere with communication, YAB totally U.

Like saying people with accents you don't like shouldn't be allowed on the radio. V silly.

TheFallenMadonna · 01/04/2009 18:12

Oh just snigger and mock like everyone else

Shambolic · 01/04/2009 18:12

I have never said this before, but the OP is either very new to MN or having a stir...

diedandgonetodevon · 01/04/2009 18:12

YABU. There are plenty of other stations out there that would be more suitable for your biggotted ears. I suggest you re-tune your radio

If you can easily understand what someone on the radio is saying then there is no problem with them doing the job imo.

onebatmother · 01/04/2009 18:18

Oh for heaven's sakes. Wrong, wrong, wrong, on so many levels, but most irksomely, te equivalent of your bricklayers example would be an announcer who couldn't speak. Which is clearly not the case.

BalloonSlayer · 01/04/2009 20:53

What everyone else said and...

Re the equal ops, it's interesting that cetain regional accents (eg scottish, NI, newcastle, welsh) are considered acceptable for serious news broadcasts but some, I suspect, will never be.

Such as:

Brummie
Cockney/Estuary English
Scouse

I wonder why that is?

beansontoast · 01/04/2009 21:00

ith thith theriouth?

noonki · 01/04/2009 21:01

YABU as pointed out above.

daftpunk · 01/04/2009 21:03

yabu...and so unfunny it's tragic.

deste · 01/04/2009 22:13

Sorry I did miss spell example and I knew I would be flamed for this post. I know many children have problems with speech but as a child it can be quite cute, I dont find it cute in an adult. I'm not new by the way I have been on here for years. I dont have a problem with regional accents either I quite like them.

yabu and a pratt

KingCanuteIAm · 01/04/2009 22:17

It can be quite cute in a child? That is a shocking statement on so many levels!

Are you bored tonight?

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 01/04/2009 22:17

You don't find it cute in an adult?

I bet the adults don't either.

It's just the way they are.

FAQinglovely · 01/04/2009 22:18

you think it's cute for a child to have a speech problem???
