to not want local school kids hiding in my drive?

i have just been a bit shaken to look out of my window and see a teenager, hood up, spying round the corner of next door's house. there are only 4 houses here and no one, except us, has children. i asked if i could help and he said no, he was ok, i then told him this was a private road and what was he doing here? he said he didnt want to get suspended.
i then saw 3 more boys in next door's drive. I asked them, nicely, to leave and they did. i phoned the school and let them know - they will inform their attendance officer.

was i being a bit unreasonable phoning the school, do you think? I am worried about come-back from said children if they get into trouble.

Hmmmmm one teenager hiding from several others

My guess is you just intervened in a bullying incident, inadvertently.

crayolaqueen · 01/04/2009 13:59

I dont think it was bullying, they were hiding from their teacher i think, and he was keeping lookout! as far as i know, they are not allowed off site at lunchtime.

um why were you "shaken"?
Was he carrying an offensive weapon?
Was he maliciously using text speak?

Perfectly reasonable to ask them to move on, but rather sad that it is automatically assumed that a teen with a hood is a potential risk.

No doubt there will now be 3 billion posts giving anecdotal evidence of the local yoofs.

oh, i thought this was going to be a 'knock and run' thread. i loved that game.

IwishIwasmorechocolatey · 01/04/2009 14:04

YANBU to have asked them to leave, nor to have phoned their school but I don't understand why you felt shaken - a little surprised I could understand!

crayolaqueen · 01/04/2009 14:10

I felt shaken as I hate confronting people about anything! mrs Assertive I am not.

I agree it's sad to assume a teen with a hood is a potentail risk, but in my defence (!) it is unusual for people to be bothered about coming up a private lane unless they really mean to be here. And everyone is out at work.

You want to try living here. Horrible little fuckers in your garden EVERY night just because their stupid thick as pig shit "parents" couldn't give a rat's arse what their brats are upto.

crayolaqueen · 01/04/2009 14:21

SBS! we live in a really quiet area with very little trouble so I can be naive! Then again, I work with teenagers so I shouldn't be. Different when you're on your own territory I think.

These days it's natural to see a group of teenagers and feel threatened. This is sad, but sensible the way things are. We have had trouble here with gangs setting fires etc.

Having said that we have to try and remember that many will still be nice kids just out playing. They are not all evil. It's hard to tell though isn't it.

katiestar · 01/04/2009 15:48

My DS is 14 and really enjoys playing hide and seek with his mates (although I hope he wouldn't go onto peoples driveways,It saddens me that you see a teenager in a hoodie and 'feel shaken'

crayolaqueen · 01/04/2009 16:22

Katie, as i said in one of my posts, it was the fact i had to confront them with no one else around that made me shake, not the fact that he was a boy in a hoodie.

Very simple, if they wear white tracksuits with a white hat then they are the worst of the "hoodies" The next ones are the bog standard hoodies and then the EMOs and goths are so sweet

crayolaqueen · 01/04/2009 17:19

what's an EMO?

lol at ripeberry's 'guide to yoof'

Ripeberry · 03/04/2009 11:23

I take it they are the skateboarders and the ones who don't look threatening (i think), someone will be along to correct me i'm sure
But yes, white tracksuit with white baseball hat and shaved head = always looking for trouble
