to think that large organisations, such as universities, may have decent flexible working policies

I've seen a job that i would really like, and obviously would be great at. So I called the large university to ask what their flexible working policy was and whether they would consider less than full time working (i mentioned 30 hours over 4 days) or job share for a job that was advertised as full time and was told "No, sorry it's full time".

well job share would be full time, and 30 hours is practically full time.

Nor will your days be spent in a cloud of somebody else's Lynx.

it was for a support role. At the moment my DS is more important to me than working full time (even though it would only me actually working an additional day). my current role is very flexible, i work core hours, can take flexi and can work from home some of the time.

i just think that large organisation ought to have flexible working policies, that could be applied to new staff, as well as existing staff, so that people don't have to pretend to want to work full time and then six months down the line ask to work less hours. I'd rather be honest from the outset, even if that means i don't get the job.
