We got a letter today giving us the option of having homework story sacks for easter. I think i'll be politely declining

mynaughtylittlesister · 26/03/2009 23:49

we are actually away the whole of the Easter hols, DD (who is in yr6) told her teacher and bless!!!!said that she will give DD her homework a whole week early so she can do it before we go away!

Poor DD, I do feel for her, because not only does she have this weeks homework but also holiday homework too - and holiday homework is alot!!!!!

TheCrackFox · 26/03/2009 23:53

YANBU. DCs should be able to relax over the holidays. A lot of these "projects" get a lot of parent "input" anyway.

cory · 27/03/2009 08:16

YANBU. It is totally based on the assumption that nothing that happens outside of school can possibly be as good for you as formal education.

echt · 27/03/2009 08:17

Don't ignore it, emka. Write back and tell your DC is on holiday. They need to be told. Actually, quite a lot are under pressure from senior management to do this in order to look good.
I am a teacher and I only set holiday homework in the exam years, which in Oz is the Year 12 (Year 13 to you).

PuppyMonkey · 27/03/2009 08:22

I don't think primary school children should have any homework at all, apart from a reading book.

123andaway · 27/03/2009 09:23

YANBU, I detest homework probably more than my DCs . A reading book and some spellings is fine, but I don't think they should get more than that at Primary. I would certinally be narked if they came home with a project to do over the holidays.

MitchyInge · 27/03/2009 09:25

I don't agree with homework for primary school children either

blametheparents · 27/03/2009 09:29

Our school does not give holiday homework, wanna join??!

McDreamy · 27/03/2009 09:37

I don't like homework for primary school children either - just some reading books.

SerendipitousHarlot · 27/03/2009 09:43

I've sent a letter to my dds school before saying that I've told her NOT to do the homework in the holidays. She's doing SATs this year and is stressed out as it is. They're called holidays for a reason

smartiejake · 27/03/2009 09:45

Primary children should have reading, spellings and tables to learn (which is what we had to do when I was at school in the 70s). End of. Any project work should be optional.

I never give my pupils holiday homework although I do have to give them a small piece of weekly literacy, (school policy)which I insist they stop after 20 minutes. It's always something relevant to what they have been doing in class and not a totally new topic so parents end up doing the teaching (which is what happens at DDs school)

swanriver · 27/03/2009 09:48

We do not get holiday homework in year 3 or 4, not sure about higher up.
I would complain and do minimum.

swanriver · 27/03/2009 09:54

On the other hand, she may really enjoy the project...do drawings of sunbaked deserts, green fields, and polar icecaps and before you know it...just pretend you are really excited by the idea and see where it leads her. Sometimes I get so stressed by what I THINK I am expected to prod my dcs into doing that I lose sight of the fun aspect of a project. Do what suits her, perhaps pictures of the clothes that different peoples in different climates wear, or the kind of houses they have? Or food they like eating.
I want a project!
