To not answer the phone when FIL rings?

Obviously we have caller display.

DH goes to the pub on a Thursday night with his mates. DH has been going to the pub every Thursday with his friends for around 8 years.

Almost every Thursday evening FIL rings. I am bored of telling him every week that DH is in the pub, so tonight I didn't answer the phone

I know IABU (probably), but DH does have a mobile that FIL could ring on a Thursday if he really needs to speak to DH.

I don't answer to anyone.
They must all leave a message and I decide whether to respond.

Stretch · 26/03/2009 22:42

You know you are not BU!

Washersaurus · 26/03/2009 22:42

I heard him complaining to DH on the phone the other day that we never answer the phone too . I know, I'll pretend I was on the toilet....

I never ever answer the phone when mil of fil rings. (I have good reasons, I won't take up your entire thread telling you the reasons.)

screamingabdab · 26/03/2009 22:46

moondog

This is what I do very often. (I hope you are not joking)
I hate being compelled to talk to anyone on the phone in the evenings.

I don't have caller display so it's equally rude to everyone
I recently heard about someone (a radio presenter) who did not give his telephone number to anyone, even quite close friends. I would like to do this really .

Washersaurus · 26/03/2009 22:49

OK, so I'll now admit that it isn't just FIL I have ignored....

I never answer the phone to callers that come up as 'private' or any numbers that I don't recognise - they can leave me a message if it is important.

OP posts:
moondog · 26/03/2009 22:49

No, I'm not.
Neither do I have a mobile phone (well, have a brick that is never on which might do me in an emergency.Noone has the number)
The idea of being harassed and hounded by calls and what I believe are known as 'texts' fills me with horror.

I'v enough hassle in my life and demands on my time as it is.

screamingabdab · 26/03/2009 22:50

Phew, do you feel better now Washersaurus?

Washersaurus · 26/03/2009 22:51

Anyway, cremeegg do tell (this thread probably isn't going anywhere). Are they abusive to you on the phone?

Thank God moondog. In the past others have judged me for my phone hatred

moondog · 26/03/2009 22:54

Oh fuck 'em.
Who cares??????

Habbibu · 26/03/2009 22:56

I rarely answer the phone. Or the door.

Washersaurus · 26/03/2009 22:56

I mean, there is no law stating if the phone rings that you have to answer it anyway. I thought that was the whole point of caller display.

There is always the risk that I will shout down the phone at FIL one Thursday "he's in the pub, like he is every Thursday when you phone, now purrlease leave me to enjoy my solitude"

OP posts:
moondog · 26/03/2009 22:56

Door too.
Clear orf and leave me in peace wontcha???

Are you shameless about it, moondog, or do you hide? I've been known to hide/switch off lights...

Washersaurus · 26/03/2009 22:59

Do you crawl around on the floor too in case a caller peers through your letter box? lol

Habbibu · 26/03/2009 23:00

No. Thankfully our porch does not allow such snoopery.

BellaNoir · 26/03/2009 23:16

I got yet another marketing call from BT this evening after being repeatedly told not too. They keep leaving weird 'silent' messages on the answer machine too.
Came home to 3 silent hang- ups on the machine today.
So when they rang again I picked up the call but didn't say anything. It gave me some satisfaction to hear a puzzled voice on the other end saying 'er, hello? Ms Noir? Ms Noir?' as I gave them the silent treatment.
.

mamas12 · 26/03/2009 23:26

Oh I love that idea bella I'm going to do that next time those calls come.
Don't feel gulity it's your home and you have no need to answer the phone at all. It took me a while to get it into kids heads that you never answer the phone when eating a meal.

moondog · 26/03/2009 23:31

Habb, I sort of go upstairs where i can't possibly hear front door..

Habbibu · 26/03/2009 23:35

Ah. Indeed. People think I sleep/have baths/go out a lot more than I actually do.

moondog · 26/03/2009 23:40

Aye, same here.
Helps enormously that now live out in sticks and not in dead centre of town.
V few surprise callers.
(Feck off, the lot of ya!)

WhoTookMyMemoryStick · 26/03/2009 23:41

My FIL is a horrid man. I really like just quietly putting the phone receiever down when he calls. It's one of life's simple pleasures. I imagine his ire and it really makes me happy. [/issues]
