To think the time has come for zero tolerance over letting your dog sh*t on the pavement!!!

I've just spent half an hour scrubbing dog shit off the wheels of the pushchair and from the soles of DD1's trainers.

I've had enough of this happening regularly on the path that leads past school and into the park. It's difficult to always avoid when you've got a 5yr old, a 2yr old and baby in the buggy.

I just think it's unbelievably inconsiderate and something needs to be done. String 'em up I say!

YANBU

This drives me insane. It's sooo vile. To be honest, I actually think that maybe dog owners should have to do some sort of a short course before being allowed to own a dog, and part of that should be about picking up poo. Because you see all these young, tough looking guys out with their dogs, and it's obvious they are never going to pick up their dog's poo, are they?? If you are not prepared to pick up dog poo, you should not own a dog.

There was an article about this a few months ago, in the times or the guardian, talking about the extent of this problem, and apparently in Switzerland they have really strict rules and trace owners using dog DNA, and the first time you offend, you get a fine of a few hundred pounds, but then if you do it again, it's a few thousand.

donnie · 26/03/2009 14:33

shove it in the owners' mouth and make them eat it - you know it makes sense.

ForeverOptimistic · 26/03/2009 14:34

The culprits around here tend to be mums with pushchairs as well. I think because they are busy making sure that their toddlers don't run off into the road etc they don't make time to clear up the mess. If you can't cope with the work that having a dog entails you shouldn't have one!

UnquietDad · 26/03/2009 14:34

I don't even see why people have to have dogs, but then I am beyond zero tolerance on this.

pginthecloset · 26/03/2009 14:35

Someone should invent a dog nappy and dogs should be enforced by law to wear them when they go out. It's the only way to get dog sh*t off the streets, because as long as people can get away without picking it up, they will.

That's my new idea for the next Dragon's Den

doobry · 26/03/2009 14:41

Can I just say I'm not middle aged, and I am a mum with a toddler in a pushchair, but I always pick up after my dog. As do all my Mum friends with dogs. We don't want our little ones toddling through dog poo any more than anyone else does!

TheCrackFox · 26/03/2009 14:41

Feelingscared, i like the sound of Switzerland. We should DNA the dog crap and then make their owners eat it. Possibly live on TV.

myredcardigan · 26/03/2009 14:41

I read the Swiss thing as well. They all have to be microchipped and the info on file contains DNA IIRC. People report dog mess and someone comes and takes a sample to find out whose dog it is. Taken very seriously as I recall.

That doesn't surprise me - they seem to have a "shop your neighbour" culture in Switzerland; every rule is taken very seriously and everything is signed in triplicate. The entire country is one big Acacia Avenue Residents' Association, with mountains.

Stretch · 26/03/2009 14:49

We have an alley on the route to school that is actually called by the locals (and kids) 'dog-shit alley' It drives me bananas.

I swear to god if I ever catch any owner not picking up the shit. I have a very bad temper at times

I'll come with you and pitch my cat repellent : "Puss Off!"

screamingabdab · 26/03/2009 15:13

Riven Yes, come to Dragon's Den too (beats smearing it on someone's back as per my earlier post)

Washersaurus · 26/03/2009 15:19

I've just found on my local council's website an online request form for street cleaning where there is dog fouling.

I have completed my request for someone to clean up the big pile of poo I rolled through this morning....I wonder if someone will actually come out and clean it up?

B1984 · 26/03/2009 15:49

I am naming and shaming SUTTON COUNCIL(Carshalton),there is loads(i mean loads!)of dog owners around where i live.On my way to dropping my dd to school i will see,and im not lying when i say, around 20(or more)piles of shit!and no bins for it around at all.I am not sure they would all pick up their crap, but it would definetly cut down on it!
My dcs are well trained`in avoiding them and they often warn me:mummy tinka poopoo!
I did once walk over it with the buggy(different area),i was soo angry, but on my way home went to a car wash place and the guy
used the jet wash to wash my wheel(for a few qquid!).

hifi · 26/03/2009 16:20

i may get one of those ball throwing things but throw crap after the owner.

louii · 26/03/2009 16:32

Why is there never any white dog shit anymore though?

hercules1 · 26/03/2009 16:33

THe white dog poo was due to chalk they used to put in dog food. Now banned.

louii · 26/03/2009 16:35

Is that honestly why, have always wondered that, lol.

Dog crap everywhere round my way as well, I did once scoop some up and leave it on a neighbours doorstep as i was sick of their dog crapping right outside my front gate.

EachPeachPearMum · 26/03/2009 21:50

May I ask out of curiosity... those of you with dogs, who clean up after them... what do you do with it when you get home? bin or loo?

Thunderduck · 26/03/2009 21:51

Bin. I usually drop it in the bins that are intended for that purpose.

doobry · 26/03/2009 22:00

I put it in dog poo bins, if that's not an option it goes in the dustbin at home.

Claire2009 · 26/03/2009 22:08

I put it in the bins provided for dog poo!

P!ssed me off when I was out for a walk the other day, on the way home there was a lady in front, she had a lab...dog shit 3 times on the pavement, a walking shit ...she didnt stop just carried on, didnt even look back! I yelled it was disgusting and she should've picked it up but she didn't look back & ignored me....

Really p!sses me off though! I mean, if you have dogs..at least have the decency to pick up after them!

onagar · 26/03/2009 22:08

I'm all for zero tolerance. I don't even want to see the smears of dog shit left after someone has picked up the biggest lumps. Maybe the nappy idea is the only answer. It would also put off those who buy a dog to look tough.

I think attitudes must be changing since we've not had one dog owner saying that their dog 'has rights too' in this thread.

Claire2009 · 26/03/2009 22:09

Pginthecloset - Dog nappies are already invented for when dogs are in heat and bleeding I agree with you though, they should be made to wear them !!!
