am soooooooooo furious I'm shaking so forgive me my rant

I have a hotpoint dishwasher (and tumble drier, washing maching and fridge) which is about 2yrs old

when I came down on Fri morning there was an error code flashing on the display so I looked up my book to see it wasn't listed in there and it advised me to phone in

remembering that this was before 8am in the morning I waited until the line opened and phoned in. I spoke to some smooze who told me that there was an error between the motor and the control module and that I would need to either pay £99 for an engineer to come out and repair it or £15per month for 10 months for an extended guarantee where by they would repair it for the next year and replace like for like if they couldn't repair it

so I went for the extended guarantee and an engineer was booked for that day. He arrived within the hour which was great as we had stuff to do on Friday, took one look at it and checke his listl. He then unplugged it, left it for 30seconds, plugged it back in and voila - job done !

He was horrified that the bloke on the phone hadn't just told me to try this and told me to phone and have the insurance cancelled as there was nothing wrong with my machine, he then checked the error code on his laptop thingy and right next to it showed me that it stated to try unplugging it

so I phoned and spoke to a lovely girl in customer services who looked it up and confirmed I should have been told this and she would speak to her managed and phone me back when she could at about 3pm - I told her that was school run time but as I have an answering maching AND 1571 she could leave me a message

came home, a missed call, no message and when tried to phone it back only a fax beep so I stupidly waited until this morning to try to phone back again and this time I got a right jobsworth who isn't interested in anything I have to say or to try to explain but told me if I try to cancel the guarentee I'll be charged for the engineer coming out (even though he was in my village for a call anyway) at a reduced for goodwill cost of £42!!! She also told me I wasn't entitled to the unplug/plug advice as my appliance was more that 90days old and that if I had a problem with it I could write to their head office in Peterborough

I feel like fecking crying, I thought I'd done the right thing phoning in with the code and this is how they fleece idiots like me for money needless to say I won't be buying hotpoint again although by her bloody tone I doubt very much that this would bother them in the slightest

sorry, rant over, as you were

Cancel the guarantee and don't pay the £42 - what they gonna do - take you to court over £42 - I don't think so.

Not entitled to the plug/unplug advice -

Right, firstly .. deep breaths.

Cut and paste the facts of your post into a letter and address it to the company concerned.

Remind them of the power of bad publicity and tell them exactly what you expect them to do to rectify the situation.

Be clear, polite and concise and I'm sure they will be reasonable.

dizzydixies · 25/03/2009 11:09

am writing a letter right now KBear, its just so fecking disappointing and I feel like such a prize pillock

Also tell them you've well and truly publicised their crapness by posting on a public forum! Good luck, they could lose several customers.

dizzydixies · 25/03/2009 11:33

dingbat, I'm meant to be setting up a cafe in the near future, won't be using them for sodding that either

I've emailed their CEO with a letter of complaint as well as sending it to their customer services team in London

nothing like going to the top to make oneself feel a bit better

words like previously loyal brand customer, credit crunch etc etc all banded about a bit - have no doubt he wouldn't give it the time of day but made me feel better for a second

Good for you, Dizzy.

I've had a nasty tangle with Hotpoint before. They couldn't care less about their customers. Luckily I bought the washing machine through John Lewis who got me a new machine from them when they heard the strife I was having.

dizzydixies · 25/03/2009 11:53

winkywinkola, I wouldn't mind but the woman this morning was so bloody up herself and when I asked her would she be happy if this was the customer service she was receiving she said 'no but thats not the point is it'

it was as if she was goading me for a fight the whole conversation and it really doesn't take much to get one from me

its even more infuriating considering the bloody job I do, I cannot imagine speaking to anyone in the condescending manner she spoke to me

am off to products to slate them, by the power of mumsnet !!!

I know, I know. They're unbelievably rude. I never buy Hotpoint now.

And I tell all my friends etc about my experiences when I hear anyone thinking of buying white goods.

Negative viral marketing is 9 x more powerful than positive.

dizzydixies · 25/03/2009 11:57

winky - have started a rant on products if you want to hop over and back me up, hopefully we can save someone else shelling out for this pap too
