Two nights running, Chinooks, the twin blade helicopters they use to transport tanks and troops in. So low that I sat up in bed the first night thinking that it was surely coming down on top of the house. Looked out of the window to see it disappearing and just clearing the top of some trees in the field over the road. I was very shaken and it woke the baby and DD too.

Now, I know they have to do night traning exercises, and the local Squadron has been to/is going to Afghanistan, and it's probably in the interests of UK security, but still....It scared the living wits out of me.

YANBU

For a couple of weeks now we have had helicopters flying low over our house, it is really scary,

I was also woken up last sunday at 7 am to the sound of bombs going off, i really thought a bomb was going to drop on our house.

I later found out it was the army training near me,

Hmm, mixed feelings about this one - my DB is in the army so I understand where you're coming from herbietea, but would it be impossible for them to let local residents know (eg via local paper or maildrops) when there are going to be night-flying exercises? We used to live near a railway, and they always sent a letter to us when they were going to be dong night-time work on the line. It can be frightening for LOs too to have that sort of noise at night - DS1 always sleeps with a large grocodile on his head 'in case the helicopters come' in the night.

there should also be an info number on the website that you can call, and it is likely that there will have been discussions with local authority about timings/ frequency.
i know it's hard to believe, but there is an awful lot of time spent deciding how much of this stuff is operationally 'essential' against the inconvenience to local residents, honest.
you do get used to it lol.

I doesnt bother me now because i know it is training and not the real thing iykwim?

I could'nt imagine what it is like for a dh/p to be in the middle of things, i really appreciate what they do for our country.

If it makes you feel any better when I was at uni the army/RAAF used to have a training week with the f111's etc (actually it was to spend any training budget left) during exam week. The pilots would find out when the exams were and then fly low over the uni and do a sonic boom. I think I ruined about 9 exams this way.

Last week we buried on of my ex students he died in Afganistan he was 22. I might not agree with the war but if they need to train they need to train. Your baby can go back to sleep we are never going to see him again.

Have you tried ringing up the base and discussing the matter with them, they might be able to give you a timescale for how long this might last.

VanillaPumpkin · 25/03/2009 16:31

When I was at a training base the students had to do night flying. It was publicised on local noticeboards and in the local paper.

Chinooks are less bother than Tornados .
