To not call in sick on behalf of my DD just because she wants to go out

DD has just rung me asking me to phone her job for her so she can go for a meal tonight - she had forgotten about the meal when her job asked her to work so agreed to work. She has only been in the job a few weeks and she doesn't really like it that much, but its a job!!! They have been a bit rubbish about sorting her hours out and its very much on an as and when she is needed basis. BUT she agreed to working tonight on Saturday so i think she IBU and will just have to suck it up about the meal - she is 18 now and lives with her BF, so i don't see why i should lie for her - she wants to be a grown up then she needs to do her own bullshitting, or at least act like a grown up and stick to her commitments.

YANBU - She needs to grow up. If she wants to chuck a sickie she can phone herself, she is a big girl now

flowerybeanbag · 23/03/2009 15:45

YANBU, if she wants to ring in sick when she's perfectly well that's up to her, but why do you have to be dragged into it?

morningpaper · 23/03/2009 15:45

YANBU why on EARTH would you ring?!??!

MitchyInge · 23/03/2009 15:46

yanbu

the cheek of it!

flowerybeanbag · 23/03/2009 15:48

I'm fairly staggered that she's even asked you tbh. I can just imagine my own parents' reaction if I'd asked them something similar at that age.

Strawbezza · 23/03/2009 15:48

YANBU, she should not be asking you to lie on her behalf, neither should she be calling in sick herself, she should be going to work.

LEMAGAIN · 23/03/2009 15:51

yep - i thought i would get a resounding YANBU, why do i feel bad then so used to getting her own fecking way she is!! Not this time!!!!

yanbu - 18 is too old to have your mum ring up for any reason.

MadameCastafiore · 23/03/2009 15:57

Unless she is unable to talk work will know for sure that she is chucking a sickie if you ring in for her.

Lulumama · 23/03/2009 15:59

good lord, she has a strong work ethic.......not

i cannot believe that (a) she asked you and (b) you need reassuring that you are doing the right thing by not calling

she needs to get to grips with the reality of living in her own place, and if you don;t work and don;t get paid, you don;t eat and can;t pay your bills

why on earth would she think this was a reasonable request?>

pagwatch · 23/03/2009 16:04

pretty crap to try and get out of work when she has agreed to go in. incredibly childish to try and get her mum to phone in.

Don't call in for her for gods sake and make sure you tell her that these issues are none of your concern - now she is past puberty.

qwertpoiuy · 23/03/2009 19:23

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 23/03/2009 20:46

I have a friend, she's 28 yet still gets friends to call in sick for her. Her housemates got fed up with it and she's tried asking me a couple of times. Crazy. I've no idea how she has held onto the job for so long.

LEMAGAIN · 24/03/2009 12:29

actually!

overweightnoverdrawn · 24/03/2009 13:32

my nephew got chosen from hundreds (literally) for a job (at tescos ) (dont flame me lol) student type job . He said to his mum and her DH ,'its such a shame that I wont be able to go in for my first 2 shifts as the first one I want to go out for my birthday and the 2nd one I will be suffering a hang over . It wasnt untill they literally fell about laughing and then explained work ethics that he actually understood . And yes bless him he went to work even though it was his 18th . LOL

compo · 24/03/2009 13:34

Did you watch that C$ documentary about The Family? Be careful or you'll have an Emily on your hands?!!

Lulumama · 24/03/2009 13:36

good for her !! did she realise why it was the right thing to do, or did she go because you wouldn;t phone in?

LEMAGAIN · 24/03/2009 15:34
