... given that it is going to cost me £2190 to get my eyes fixed!! So each eye is costing me £700 more than the "from" price.
Does anybody know anybody who ever got anything at the "from" price?

I'm having it done on the 14th May... eeeek!!!

No! The "from" price just makes it look that bit more attractive to us, so we don't dismiss something the first time we hear of it.

At least you can afford to get your eyes done. I'm probably stuck with glasses and contacts for life. I don't know if I'd want to risk having it done if I got the money though tbh. I might come out blinder than when I went in! lol, no I doubt it, I don't know if I'd want to take a chance though, even if the risks very small.

Good luck in May. I hope you get the 20/20 vision you're hoping for. (Then I will be jealous, lol joke).

Luckily my dad has said he would pay for an eye, lol.
When I was pg he paid for the whole family to go on holiday to Cyprus and I wouldn't go as I would be about 7mths pg and the heat would have killed me off. So he offered to pay for an eye to be done if I paid for the other.

Yes! My DH got his done for the minimum price for each eye (?595 - note Euros) and one of my eyes was ?595 and the other was ?900 (more blind in one eye than the other).

It all depends on your level. My minimum eye was -1.25 while my ?900 eye was -2.50.

Still worth it!!

Sorry, the euro symbol is come out as a ?

systemsaddict · 23/03/2009 16:27

my optician told me it's well worth looking into but would cost me more like £3000 per eye decided to stick to lenses

Nassau · 23/03/2009 16:33

Systemaddict - The Optical Express over here (Dublin) did free consultations (and 2 hours worth of eye testing) and would let you know how much it would cost there and then. Maybe your Optician doesn't want to lose you .

twoluvlykids · 23/03/2009 16:36

Elf - you're very brave, I'm too scared to have mine done.

Nassau · 23/03/2009 16:44

Don't be scared. 10 mins each eye - some lovely optical effects when they begin. Slight soreness from the clamps holding your eye open but the actual operation (laser) doesn't hurt (left clamp hurt more - meant to be more nerves on that side or something). Couple of hours of blindness then vision. I got mine done at 1pm and by 4.45 I could see the football results on the tv (slightly blurred) and by 6.45 I was putting the pizza in the oven for tea!

Best money I ever spent. Got them done in December 07. DH's op was in Feb 08 - no complaints there either.

But, don't the eyes carry on deteriorating afterwardS?

I've been shortsighted for 40 years, and my eyes stay the same then suddenly get worse every couple of years.

Wouldn't that keep happening?

Then it'd be a waste of money.

steviesgirl · 23/03/2009 17:04

Most cases of shortsightedness the eyesight stops getting worse by mid to late twenties; usually when the eyeball stops growing, which is what causes the short sight in the first place, (the eyeball is too long from front to back and the light rays don't focus on the retina but in front of it instead).

In some cases though, the eyes don't stop deteriorating. This is called "myopic creep".

They don't usually offer laser correction unless your eyesight has stabilised (your prescription hasn't changed in 2 years).

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 23/03/2009 19:33

the people at optical express were happy as my prescription has not changed for two years. They said that its likely to have good vision until I get to my forties when the eyes tend to have trouble for reading, but even if I needed reading glasses at exactly forty, it would still give me nearly 13 years of good sight.

I am terrified by the idea of it! I have been umming and ahhing for a while - I did ring up a few times, first time I was too young, second time I'd just had DD, third time I was still b/feeding (supposed to leave a year after childbirth/ breastfeeding so that the hormones settle down).

Nassau - good point re the eye strenght, mine are -3.5

It does seem incredible that I should be able to see!
