Quint - he has special chemicals and then has to leave it for at least a week before adding fish - although for a moment there he thought he'd added the wrong chemicals and may have had to start again!!!!!

i don't think i've laughed this much in ages!

its the little things....

I know he doesnt need to boil it, I just wanted to add to your fun, ie make you squeel "DH did you BOIL the water before filling the tank!" and him going, "oh blimey, now I have to start all over again...."

katz · 22/03/2009 22:17

ah but we did have that moment!

does look very pretty now though, he's done a great job!

Katz- how is he cycling the tank? He will need more than a week! (Fish may die)
email me and I will tell you about 'fishless cycling' You need ammonia, a squeeze of the dirt from a filter in an established tank and a water test kit.

I can help out if he needs it. My tanks took 3 weeks to cycle.

QuintessentialShadow · 22/03/2009 22:20

Enjoy your aquarium. Fish are great. (till they are dead and you need to deal with the cadavre)

Hulababy · 22/03/2009 22:20

Sounds like it'll be good when sorted.

So, des he have a plan for emptying it, cleaning it, etc?

katz · 22/03/2009 22:24

ginger - i have no idea! we need all the help we can get, that would be very helpful! he has a starter kit with all the chemicals and a testing kit, plus the shop we got it from said bring in a water sample and they'll test it.

hula - again i have no idea, this is very much his tank! i shall enjoy looking at it!

He's hoping it proves more sucessful than the bioorb which was a fish killer! and we have donated to DD1's class.

My soon to be DH says 'Please, please, please do a fishless cycle, can you put swap half of your filter media for someones mature media? You could theorhetically put half your load of fish in right away then, and increase slowly from there, or use the media to kickstart and then cycle with ammonia as posted above. Remember it's your filter you cycle not your tank and most bottled tank chemicals don't work unless they are the refridgerated kind and they have been kept fridges from start to finish'

Yes he is fish mad!

cory · 25/03/2009 08:30

Ha! He won't be doing that when he's got to my stage of lunacy and needs to shift 200 ltrs of water every week. Agree about the fishless cycle. The best thing is to join a fish forum. Tropical Fish Forums are very good.

katz · 25/03/2009 10:40

thanks for all the advice. Is there a good fish forum, like the mumsnet of the fish world?

The shop where we bought the tank from is fab, its an independent shop who seem to see it more as a hobby than a a business, when we were in there a customers was having his fish checked for illness, most were just old and were advised to just put them back and let nature take it cause rather than being flogged some unnecessary medicine and a second man came in with a filter not working, the guy said oh it probably just needs a good clean, took it apart cleaned it and handed back again resulting in no sale! They have said bring a water sample in and they will check it ect.

DH wants a marine tank next but were starting at the beginning with the tropical, having moved on from goldfish/black mores!

fishcrazy might be a good place to start. haven't been on it for a long time, but the forums were very helpful when I was setting up our tank.

Gingerbear · 25/03/2009 22:10

tropicalfishcentre is a good website. www.tropicalfishcentre.co.uk/
Also
thinkfish www.thinkfish.co.uk/have a fish tank creator that lets you choose a community of fish that are compatible and the correct number for your size of tank.

cory · 26/03/2009 09:23

I'd be careful with thinkfish; some of their compatibility choices are not that great.

tropicalfishcentre is good but not all that lively. The best one imo is Trocial Fish Forums at www.fishforums.net//

katz · 27/03/2009 14:33

he's getting some plants tomorrow to go in the tank the fish will be coming in a couple of weeks after we have been to a wedding.

I'll keep you posted on their progress!
