RIPPED OFF AT NCT SALE!!!

hoke74 · 21/03/2009 18:59

I went to an NCT sale today and paid £15 for a secondhand Tomy Babysling - sealed in it's box, with a label that said complete and nothing that said 'sold as seen'.

When I got home, the lumbar support was missing.

I checked my consumer rights and emailed the organisers straight away.

The organiser says that I need to tell them what colour label was on the box so that they can trace the seller. But I bought several items and I can't remember what colour ticket was on the babysling!

I am so annoyed - because the label didn't say parts were missing and it didn't say 'sold as seen'. I do have rights but don't seem to be having any help from the NCT organiser.

Has anyone had similar problems?

well in all fairness if they can't trace the seller they can't do an awful lot?

did the ticket not have a description written on it?

llareggub · 21/03/2009 19:02

No. But then I'd have checked it before buying it, to be honest. I think I'd assume that it was "sold as seen" as it is second hand. I suspect you may have to chalk it up to experience, I'm afraid.

EldonAve · 21/03/2009 19:02

It is their fault that they have made it impossible to trace the seller

Demand your money back and maybe they will change their practices

littleducks · 21/03/2009 19:04

do you have any labels? at nct sales i go to half the label stays with the item, so i would know which item it was from the price on that label

was it brand new? (you say sealed) perhaps the seller didnt know parts were missing? tbh i do check everything i buy

Lulumama · 21/03/2009 19:04

i also would have checked the item before purchase and would have presumed that it would all be pre owned stuff

if it was sealed then, maybe it was not known to the previous owner it was missing a part?

why not give the organisers a run down of all the colour tickets you bought and the items, and they can work out who the sling was from?

Lulumama · 21/03/2009 19:05

it is not their fault !

gods sake, the NCT is run by volunteers and the money goes to charity, demanding your money back and being stroppy is really not fair.

the organisers are not responsible for the condition of what people sell

SoupDragon · 21/03/2009 19:07

EldonAve said it was their fault they've made it impossible to trace the seller, not that it was their fault it was incomplete.

LadyMuck · 21/03/2009 19:07

What are you expecting the NCT to do out of interest?

FAQinglovely · 21/03/2009 19:07

"It is their fault that they have made it impossible to trace the seller"

erm not they haven't - they've told the OP to tell her what colour label was on the box - sounds like a way of identifying sellers to me.......

macdoodle · 21/03/2009 19:07

the money goes to charity what the NCT charity???

EldonAve · 21/03/2009 19:08

Sorry to have confused matters but on another thread today hoke74 said they took the labels off when she paid...
here

CarGirl · 21/03/2009 19:08

equipment is supposed to have a 2nd label on it with the sellers contact details for this reason.

However eveything is "sold as seen" and usually their are signs up saying this.

Can you even remember how much you paid for it? Whether it said tomy sling on the label or anything that may help them trace the seller?

lisad123 · 21/03/2009 19:09

not all goes to nct

MayorNaze · 21/03/2009 19:09

er, the NCT is a charity? sales are a large part of their fundraising both locally and nationally. by all means get shirty if it makes you feel better, but if you have chucked the tickets away, then really, there's not a huge amount they can do.

especially if you get arsey.

madlentileater · 21/03/2009 19:09

have helped run these events in the past, and tbh they can be a complete nightmare- some sellers aren't very helpful, don't follow guidelines and getting the right money to the right people was always a headache.
I think, tbh, you should have checked before you bought.

Littlefish · 21/03/2009 19:10

Yes macdoodle, the NCT is a charity.

Lulumama · 21/03/2009 19:11

yes, the NCT is a charity, why the face?

the money goes towards things like training local ante natal and post natal teachers and breast feeding support.

even if the labels were removed, the organisers will have lists of what items were sold, they might well sift thorugh it all to fidn the seller BUT i would not go in there with the attitude of being hard done to and ripped off, as i said, it is all done by volunteers. it is not their fault.

MayorNaze · 21/03/2009 19:12

once expenses ie hall hire etc are deducted, then yes, actually it does all go to the nct, whether that be locally or nationall.

CarGirl · 21/03/2009 19:12

well if it was £15 and "complete" was written on it if you can remember anything else they may be albe to trace it for you, it may depend on how many sellers they had though.

littleducks · 21/03/2009 19:13

the nct is def a charity, the breastfeeding helpline for example is free (well cost of call) to use if you have trouble bfing so sales go to fund that

a nearly new sale isnt like a charity shop where all the selling price goes to the charity instead the nct get a % of all sales

i believe nearly new sales are their biggest fundraising source

hoke74 · 21/03/2009 19:17

There was only one label on it.

EldonAve - Yes - that's right.. they did take the whole of the label off... so there is nothing left on there.

littleducks - I agree, they should t good idea - I think they should leave half the ticket on, so you can trace the seller if there are any problems!

The sling was secondhand but there was tape sealing the box and written on the tape was the word "complete" - the box had a see through plastic front, so I could see the sling was in good condition.

On the label, it said the the "as new, complete, excellent condition"

And there was nothing on there that said 'sold as seen' and I didn't see any signs that said that either.

This was my first time at an NCT sale and I'm very disappointed.

hoke74 · 21/03/2009 19:18

When I say 'They took the labels off' I mean the volunteers who took payment.

OP posts:
edam · 21/03/2009 19:19

If they took the label off, they can't use that as an excuse not to refund the money.

MayorNaze · 21/03/2009 19:19

sorry - didn't realise at first that the ticket had been removed at the sale.

you could ask, nicely if perhaps the seller could be traced?

but potentially there could 150+ sellers so not as easy as it seems.

CarGirl · 21/03/2009 19:19

Ask the NCT volunteers to check all the labels that were £15 to check for "as new, complete, excellent condition" being written on it. Offer to sort through them yourself perhaps to show good willing. There could be over a thousand labels btw.
