to expect my cleaner not to throw out mine and DCs supper for this evening?

Mumsnet lentil soup was cooling in a lidded pan in our (very cool) utility room when I left for work this morning. Came back this evening - no soup to be seen. Not in fridge/freezer/anywhere in kitchen. Pan cleaned and hanging up. Has she really thrown it out?? I am furious.

You are judging her by saying she is not so bright. Uncalled for.

talbot · 20/03/2009 20:03

Oh come on, is there no-one you know that you wouldn't describe as being "not the brightest"???

Babbity · 20/03/2009 20:11

I am judging her on the basis of a lot of not very bright things she has done; I don't feel I should have to apologise for that although you clearly think I do, Goober. If anything, I assumed that she had more common sense than she has now demonstrated. If that's judging her I guess I'm guilty of judging her on her actions. So be it.

I would be a bit peed off if i was expecting to come home to some home made soup, genuine mistake, silly thing to do! I don't see anything wrong with you mentioning that she's not the brightest! Some people are blessed with commmon sense, some people aren't. Fact of life.

I have an extremely 'book smart' friend with no common sense, gets her in no end of trouble.

AitchTwoOh · 20/03/2009 20:16

OP's fine imo, how annoying to find your dinner for the night chucked. surely most people recognise lentil soup whe they see it?

oneplusone · 20/03/2009 20:19

Babbity, we may have the same cleaner! My cleaner is a lovely, sweet, hardworking reliable girl but she is a bit daft and seems to lack common sense. I put it down to the fact that she's from another country and maybe they do things differently over there. She also tidies and folds clothes a lot but does manage to clean the loos as well so i don't complain.

I know I am going to get flamed for this but i do think she is not the brightest of sparks and if she was she would not be a cleaner. But she is a lovely girl, great with the kids and I like her.

MorningTownRide · 20/03/2009 20:20

I've had a few cleaning jobs.

  • Three ladies in a van visiting about 5 houses a day.

Some want the works (tidying, washing up, ovens etc), some want a dust and hoover without moving anything.

She may have forgotten which one you are.

I'm sure if I'd found a pot of congealed soup/ slop (because lets face it cold soup looks nasty) in a weird place like a utility room I'd have assumed 'Her Nibs' had gone off her rocker and binned it.

poshwellies · 20/03/2009 20:27

'she is not the brightest of sparks and if she was she would not be a cleaner.'

I'm a cleaner-I clean or shall we say 'caretake' a luxury holiday cottage-I make sure their holiday home for the week is spotless and all their needs are met.I class myself as fairly intelligent.I earn a decent wage and it fits around my dh's career and my childrens schooling.

Comments like that piss me off, sorry.

BigGitDad · 20/03/2009 20:28

I'd be pissed off if our cleaner threw the food out though in this case I'm not sure about being upset about Lentil soup..
Chicken and Mushroom soup now that's a different matter...
I would make a comment about our cleaners but they might be Mn'ers so I will give that a miss!
By the way babbity you were not offensive so ignore those posts.

Nabster · 20/03/2009 20:29

Don't apologise poshwellies.

TheFallenMadonna · 20/03/2009 20:30

Ah now my cleaner is the brightest of sparks, being on her second degree and all.

Nothing wrong with the OP's comments IMO, but oneplusone just took it that bit further...

MorningTownRide · 20/03/2009 20:31

Yes poshwellies, don't apologise.

'she is not the brightest of sparks and if she was she would not be a cleaner.'

What a twatty thing to say.

Babbity · 20/03/2009 20:33

Oi, it was really nice curried lentil soup (a 10/10 MN recipe no less), but yes I can see it might not have looked quite so appealing cold.

(phew, my first AIBU; I feel strangely exhilerated)

OP posts:
talbot · 20/03/2009 20:34

Well yes, but it wasn't the OP who made that remark.

poshwellies · 20/03/2009 20:36

Welcome to AIBU babbity

Morloth · 20/03/2009 20:37

'she is not the brightest of sparks and if she was she would not be a cleaner.'

One of my sisters is a cleaner, she is a bit OCD and figured out a way to get payed for something she loves to do, her small business has a breathtaking turnover (now employs a couple of other mothers in her area part time). She is the brightest of sparks and is a cleaner.

It would be annoying to have your lovely soup tossed, but lets face it, lentil soup is not that nice to look at (especially when cold) so I can see why she made the mistake. Time for takeaway!

mumeeee · 20/03/2009 20:39

YABU to be annoyed with her. She made a mistake.

LoveMyGirls · 20/03/2009 20:39

You want to thank her imo, I've just done a food hygiene course and leaving food at room temp all day is a recipe for food poisoning.

Food should be put in a fridge within 90 mins of it being cooked and foods used for buffets should be consumed or put in oven or in fridge at 4hrs maximum.

Bacteria multiples between 8 and 63 degrees.

I wouldn't risk eating food that has been left out all day at all, ever.

TheFallenMadonna · 20/03/2009 20:42

Meh. I would. And do.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 20/03/2009 20:44

Oh come on, lentil soup left out in a cold place for less than a day and then heated thoroughly and eaten the same day is highly unlikely to give anyone food poisoning.

Babbity · 20/03/2009 20:44

LoveMyGirls that did cross my mind, too. It is pretty cold in the utility room (stone walls; no heating; like a larder really) but probably not as cold as 8 degrees.

mummeee are we not allowed to get annoyed with people who make mistakes? I thought that was the point of AIBU - to have a bit of a rant in a controlled (ish) environment, when you'd never dream of mentioning it to someone directly....

OP posts:
BigGitDad · 20/03/2009 20:45

Personally Babbity I'd find it offensive that every one is writing your lentl soup off without having seen or tasted it?
Lovemy girls, I must be a walking miracle as when I was a student I left so much food out for ages. Chilli con carne would be out for two or three days at a time... Maybe it did poison me at the time but I was too drunk to remember

BigGitDad · 20/03/2009 20:46

AIBU seems abit like Judge Judy in here sometimes Babbity...

Babbity · 20/03/2009 20:47

BigGitDad I am mortally offended actually but I am trying not to show it [brave soldier icon]

OP posts:
talbot · 20/03/2009 20:48

I would happily eat food left all day in a cool room so long as it didn't involve seafood, meat or certain dairy. After all, my butter, eggs, bread and cakes survive happily at room termperature.
