To expect fellow freecyclers to be polite when responding to my posted offers?

I am a fairly new freecycler & have offered quite a few items recently. The responses I get range from the polite to "can i have this" which i think is pretty rude and there is no way I am letting my item go to that person - what do you think?

YANBU but you will soon find the best thing to do is write the following at the end of all your posts:

"I won't make phone calls so please arrange collection via email. Only
polite emails will be considered, that include punctuation and no text
speak!"

The worst I had was 'i want it where do you live'!!!

rubyslippers · 20/03/2009 15:59

i am not sure how "can i have this is" is rude

maybe a please or thank you would be nice but it is not abusive in any way just a maybe a bit curt

I do think emails and texts are easily open to mis-interpretation

I'm new to freecycling too. And i agree! You also get the stories which are obviously made up! Mostly tho, everyone has been nice....

I don't reply to the ones that ask you to call them about it, usually on a mobile.

Err, I don't think so.

Fimbo · 20/03/2009 16:02

I have joined but not offered or asked for anything yet, I am scared incase a random nutter comes to the door!

mamatotwo · 20/03/2009 16:02

I think the rude bit was the fact that this is all the e-mail said

I was a bit apprehensive at first, but all the people who have come so far have been really friendly and I will certainly keep on making offers as it is a great concept

I think some people recycling don't speak / write great English, so you have to have some level of tolerance for rather odd messages.

You could say 'polite requests only', or just give it to the polite people and not to the ones you think are rude - but I've only had people be very grateful in person.

GrendelsMum · 20/03/2009 16:40

p.s. I had one 18-year old lad come to pick up some stuff who was obviously scared that I would be a random nutter, and brought his dad to sit in a car and watch as he went into and out of the house.

Lindenlass · 20/03/2009 16:49

I arrange as often as I possibly can to leave stuff outside to be collected, or to collect from outside someone's house for safety reasons.

bubblagirl · 20/03/2009 16:57

i have met lots of nice and some persistent people but to be honest i want it gone and quick so tend to just give it to who ever have just been lucky they have all been really nice

frogs · 20/03/2009 16:59

Well you're Grendel's mother, what did you expect?
