to think that oversubscribed schools should perhaps think before announcing their "outstanding" ofsted results.

ds didnt get into our 1st choice primary school. despite going to the pre-school there and living 2 mins walk away we are 4 houses outside the catchment. the 1st choice school is the best in our region, there arent many great schools aroound here it is oversubscribed. we got our placement on tuesday night. for our second choice school, 10 mins away and not bad, but not great.

several parents are upset that their lo's will be disrupted and have to leave their friends etc. i wasnt too upset, disappointed, but we new it would be a longshot.

anyway all the children had a letter today announcing the schools "outstanding" grade in the ofstead report. apparently "governance was also commended, an area of weakness last report" so the school has got even better! i know its bad timing, but aibu to think its also v tactless?

am hormonal, so not seeing clearly!

So, was this a letter addressed to all the families who applied, even those who didn't get a place? Sounds insensitive if so.

Wonderstuff · 20/03/2009 13:09

I can understand why it upset you, but I can also see why the school would want to share the report and celebrate success. IME outstanding schools are a long way off perfect and satisfactory ones can be fantastic.

OracleInaCoracle · 20/03/2009 13:36

oh, it was sent out to ALL the parents.

I'm assuming a clerical error and that they meant to send it out only to the families who got a place. Inexcusable waste of money apart from anything else.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 20/03/2009 13:41

Presumably what OP meant is that it went to everyone currently at the school, including the attached pre-school - even though several of the pre-school children have not got reception places at the school.
I think you are being unreasonable, lissielou, if what you mean is that you think the school should have gone through the list of children at preschool and not sent the letter to those who applied for but did not get a reception place.

ComeOVeneer · 20/03/2009 13:44

I assume it was sent out to all parents who have children currently at the school and pre-school. I think YABU tbh. I say that as a parent of a child who also hasn't got a place at our first choice school, a school that I am the chair of the pta (a pta that I helped raise over £15k last year, that my daughter is at (she is leaving in July so no sibling advantage).

AMumInScotland · 20/03/2009 13:48

Oh I had missed the point about being at preschool there. That's reasonable then - some of the parents at the preschool may still be interested in the Ofsted report even if they are not going to the main school, and it would be odd to not send the report to all of the parents at the school. I had thought they were deliberately sending it to unsuccessful applicants who therefore had no connection with the school.

BalloonSlayer · 20/03/2009 13:48

I agree it's pigging tactless.

OracleInaCoracle · 20/03/2009 13:50

i know iabu, just the timing is v bad and unfortunate.

piscesmoon · 20/03/2009 13:54

If a school gets an outstanding Ofsted they are bound to want to advertise the fact!

ThingOne · 20/03/2009 13:57

Schools are obliged to tell all parents of the results of their ofsted inspection. They have to tell them whether its good or bad. So its not tactless, or insensitive. They're just doing what they have to.

piscesmoon · 20/03/2009 16:32

It isn't the schools job to be tactful about their results. It is very good for the school to be oversubscribed, just not good for the parents who want a place but can't get one.

PrimulaVeris · 20/03/2009 16:38

I can see how it's unfortunate but the school is obliged to inform parents - this includes the preschool - and no doubt it will be emblazoned across your local paper too.

It's a fact, and one the school is rightly proud of.

Any chance of your getting in on waiting list? You sound v. close.
