No

Only for people who you wouldn't ordinarily send any other form of official thanks to. It shouldn't replace a card or letter if that's what you'd usually send.

I've thanked people for cards and presents via Facebook before and don't see any problem with doing so. A token thank you is fine for a token gift IMO.

I would have thought a phone call would have been nice, am tempted to write on her bloody wall, I won't be bothering next year if that's all she can be bothered do in the way of thanks grrrr

A thank you is a thank you whatever medium is used. YABU.

laweaselmys · 19/03/2009 10:40

Yes. It's fine - they've said thank you, I'm not sure why it being on paper would make it any more of a thank you.

nulgirl · 19/03/2009 10:49

If you are both facebook users then it is acceptable for you to use an electronic means of communication to say thanks.

Why are you shocked. I would have thought it was a nice way to do it. What did you expect from her? My mum texted me saying thanks for the small party that we threw for her on her birthday. Would that be deemed unaccpetable in your eyes?

Salme101 · 19/03/2009 10:50

Inclined to say YANBU. I have a few friends who just text me or use Myspace to send thanks, but these are people I've only known for the last few years, and I'm on a fairly casual basis with, e.g. some of them don't even know my address. If I'm sending thanks or greetings, I will use a card because I think it's nicer to show that you have made a little more effort, but I think I may be among the last of a generation to be bothered with such things (I'm 33, so I can still remember the period before mobiles and email).

Sorrento · 19/03/2009 11:21

Because I don't see that much of her a phone call would have been nice, I'd have been equally miffed at a text in all honesty.
We both use facebook, but I haven't considered it as a means to communicate with immediate family, seems a impersonal

YABU, a thanks is a thanks, at least she had the decency to show her appreciation.

FatFree · 19/03/2009 22:56

YABU.
