to think a 20% increase in council tax is just a tad unreasonable in this ecnomy.

WTF?! We cannot afford this.

I think there must be some error. We are in the second highest band in Spelthorne (Sunbury) and I just can't get my head round how anyone could put our haouse in this band.

Does anyone know how/if we can challenge the band we are in?

According to The Times no council has an increase of over 5% this year, so something is wrong with your bill.

LadyMuck · 16/03/2009 17:52

Or do you get some council tax benefit? In which case if you lost the benefit you would see the net bill go up I guess.

CharleeInChains · 16/03/2009 17:57

My bill has gone down by £20?

Am i missing something? I am band B.

AtheneNoctua, fear not.

Your council tax bill last year was £2342.93

Your council tax bill this year is £2422.63

That is a rise of 3.4% on last year. Don't know where your 20% came from, but you don't have to worry about it.

Perhaps one of the components of your council tax went up 20% - but your overall bill shouldn't have done. Mine went up 3% overall.

I know councils still have to provide services, but I know someone who applied to be a bin man for the council and they said that they had a waiting list of 250 people, added to which they were laying off binmen. So they are making cuts in some areas it looks like.

AtheneNoctua · 16/03/2009 20:31

Well, the 20% came from DH saying it had risen that much. But, I came up with the same numbers you did.
