Collecting prams, I just don't get it. How do people get so excited over prams??

The pushchair forum is by far the saddest and most disturbing forum on this site IMO!

OP posts:

Its a phase i have been through. i loved buggies and prams.
I amazed my sis by name checking every pram i saw on a 'stop the war march' a few years back, some by only spotting a wheel. But like most phases once dc grew out of prams so did i.
Now its lawnmowers i get all excited about, god i need a life.

giantkatestacks · 16/03/2009 14:17

I see why people like them - people collect things - thats ok.

What I find weird is people changing them all the time - I get quite attached to mine - in fact when my 5 year old one broke and we were very kindly given an old one by a friend (of exactly the same model) I was strangely a bit sad.

I like having a buggy thats seen me through thick and thin...I'll stop now as I'm aware this may be a bit weird.

Morloth · 16/03/2009 14:18

Hey, whatever floats your boat.

misdee · 16/03/2009 14:19

atm i'm trying to find oen that dd4 will actually fall asleep in and stay asleep in, and that will also fit in my car. unfortunatly my main pram which i use day in day out, wont fit in my car.

giantkatestacks · 16/03/2009 14:22

Now you see thats confusing to me misdee - why would you buy a pram for main that wouldnt fit in your car?

Whats all this having 2 prams business? surely you buy one at birth that takes you all the way through to the end and the next kid as well? [even more confused than before]

4andnotout · 16/03/2009 14:23

I love prams and all related accessories i also adore cloth nappies, everyone likes different things

Habbibu · 16/03/2009 14:24

kate, I have a huge silver cross coach built thing that served as dd1's first bed, and was just lovely to walk and walk and walk with. Then we have one that fits in the car. And is not so lovely. I guess it's like having a sports car for fun, and another one for ordinary stuff.

misdee · 16/03/2009 14:25

giantkatestakes, i have a 4 dd's, a zafira and a stupid stupid boot, that limits me to strollers really.

but i walk pretty much everywhere, so i have a main walkign opram, massive basket fror all the other dd's book bags, pe kits, water bottles etc, then pop by the local shops to pick up bread, milk, etc.

a stroller wouldnt do the job that my main pram does. it would be over loaded and habve bits hanging off it everywhere.

but i need a stroller for just nipping out if in town with the car, or for holidays

MrsMattie · 16/03/2009 14:27

I must admit, pram hunnage perplexes me. I got DD's pram secondhand and cannot wait to Ebay it and get a lightweight, cheapo stroller instead. Prams are dull.

EyeballsintheSky · 16/03/2009 14:28

What do you have as your main pram misdee? I've seen enough of your posts to know how many prams pass through your hands so I'm intrigued to know what you've settled on for your workhorse pram?

giantkatestacks · 16/03/2009 14:30

ah I see - though I dont own a car either so its all a bit mysterious to me. Its a thing you put your baby in to get them from a to b isnt it - not a status symbol or a fashion accessory.

I dont get the nappies thing either 4andnotout - I love the motherease that I use but dont see why other people get all excited about woolly ones and ones of different colours - after all its a bit of material that collects poo...

Am now worried that I dont have a MN niche as I dont seem to like prams, nappies or bumsex [wibk]

misdee · 16/03/2009 14:31

lol a lot do pass through, mainly for cleaning, and getting back on the road for new owners.

my main pram is a m+p skate. the basket looks useless but is actually really good. its like a mesh base with 2 bungee cords. i can carry everything in it, and dd3 even hops underneather for a ride whilst we are waiting for the buggyboard.

giantkatestacks · 16/03/2009 14:31

that was of course a and not in fact a wibk

Habbibu · 16/03/2009 14:34

Kate, I don't think my SC is a status symbol or accessory - I've just always loved them. My mum was a nanny and nursery nurse, so we've got loads of photos with her and babies in these prams. I guess to me (very personally) it just represents motherhood - my mum, mostly! - and all the lovely stuff I remember from childhood and want to pass on to dd.

Plus second hand they hold their value pretty well, so I'll probably get all my money back!

misdee · 16/03/2009 14:36

i can fit my pram in if i leave dd1 or dh behind...

giantkatestacks · 16/03/2009 14:44

habbibu - no I would have loved a SC - or my mums old one - I've got pics of me and my siblings sitting in one outside our front door - my mum was a nursery nurse too...

rookiemater · 16/03/2009 14:46

YABU.

I'm not particularly interested in prams or bum sex the other topic that has cropped up but it is the height of rudeness to create a thread slagging off an entire community of Mumsnet.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 16/03/2009 14:49

how rude, there is no need what so ever. We're all different and that is the beauty of mumsnet. Just ask yourself what you have achieved by this post?

MrsMattie · 16/03/2009 14:53

Pram huns have been in for a good natured slating for as long as I can remember on MN. It's kind of goes with 'moggling' and 'The Bar', doesn't it? I mean, it's all light hearted fun...isn't it?

rookiemater · 16/03/2009 14:57

Well Mrs Mattie, I don't think to call a hobby "sad" or "disturbing" is frightfully good natured, do you ?

I mean I find the Baby Names subject incredibly dull and find it absolutely bizarre that anyone would subject a name that both they and their DP are in agreement with to the judgement of a bunch of faceless mumsnetters, but have never mentioned it before, because its just uncalled for.

But I guess my secret is out of the closet

EyeballsintheSky · 16/03/2009 14:58

Aw, I like the look of the Skate, unusual enough to catch my eye I wondered about the basket as it looks like a flat tray on the pics. Must go and prod one

MrsMattie · 16/03/2009 14:59

Love the fact that this has turned into a pram huns thread! Good work ladies

mrsruffallo · 16/03/2009 15:01

Depends on the hobby, rookiemater

misdee · 16/03/2009 15:55

eyeballs in the sky, i can do you a current pic of how much the basket holds as have just come back with dd's and vast amount of junk lol
