to think that at 15 months my DS shouldn't have been to A&E 4 times and have a head covered in bruises??!!

Tonight has been our 4th dash to A&E this time a massive cut to the head and loads to blood thought I was going to faint and DS die!!
He is so lovely but really really active and keeps spinning on the spot then falling over. He is black and blue! AIBU to think this is a little over the top at this age......people are starting to stare.....

I wouldn't worry, the head's a normal places for bruises at this age. They are unstable on their feet and fall into furniture. The staff understand.

sw1, the week before last we had DD at the hospital no fewer than 3 times. the first time was for a rash and high temp with severe vomiting. The second time was because she had trapped her foot under a metal chair leg. The third time from when she fell and gashed her forehead open on a concrete step at the local boating lake.

On the third occasion when I walked in the receptionist took one look at me and started to fill DD's name and details in without asking me

This on top of me being kept in overnight at the maternity ward for labor like pains at 20ish weeks.
I am sick of the sight of our local hospital lol.

DD is 15mo (nearly 16mo) completely normal for this to happen.

I hope your DS feels okay now.

sw1 · 15/03/2009 20:40

You just feel sooooo bad and look terrible! I promise I watch him but its just continuous! He tried to climb out the high chair this morning so I have now had to strap him down, those things I can manange but the day to day falls when running etc how do you spot that??

Thansk insertwitty do you think 15 months is just teh age for this sort of thing? Walking at 11 months I would have thought he would be less clumsy by now??

I know exactly how you feel. Between the age of 1-2, ds1 was in and out of A&E with knocks to the head. I was expecting SS to come barging through the door on a few occasions. He also has "giraffe" legs as he is always knocking them as well and covering them in bruises.

raindroprhyme · 15/03/2009 20:46

My DS1 ended up in A&E the day he started walking. He has split both eyebrows twice, chin once and has a lovely selection of scars on the back of his head. Only needed stiches once glue and steri strips are a wonderful thing. At one point the receptionist new my name and we were seen immediatly without having to do forms as she knew all our details, surprised i never got a christmas card.

You get used to it and i soon managed not to panic at the time and sob into the hot A&E doctors shoulder once the nurse had assured me he was not going to bleed to death.

DS is now 8 and has already started making up stories to impress the girls at school.

Don't worry, frozen peas def help bruises fade quicker.I am much more relaxed with DS2 and have even steri stripped more minor splits that are covered by his hair myself.

Having sons is great. DS1 has just started playing rugby so no doubt we will become regulars at A&E agsin!

insertwittynicknameHERE · 15/03/2009 20:48

sw1, DD has been walking since she was 8mo, a bit of a shock to mine ans DH's system to be honest lol. She goes through phases of seemingly falling over her own feet.

Also the fact that she is so bloody independent doesn't help. She will not hold your hand, she will not wear reigns, and she will not wear a wrist strap. DD scares me half to death on a daily basis, I try not to crowd her and do things for her though. But it is so hard.

5inthebed, do you ever notice bruises on their legs and think how on earth have they done that? I too was so worried about SS knocking on our door about it, until I spoke to my neighbor and told her I was worried. She said that if DD was going into A&E with multiple broken bones etc then I probably would have SS at the door, but not to worry about bruises like that etc.

duchesse · 15/03/2009 20:52

Ha! Ours was just the same. Always on the go, always overestimating his abilities, and could never seem to stop his head hitting the floor/stones/tarmac when he fell over. I was so close to forcing him to wear a cycle helmet... Every single photo of him at that age comes complete with hen's egg sized bruise, and he'd had stitches by the age of a year. Some are just born adventurous I guess...

duchesse · 15/03/2009 20:54

I also used to think what we really needed was padded cell room so that we could have five minutes' peace without having mop up blood... This too shall pass, only with quite a few more accidents before it does.

Bonnycat · 15/03/2009 20:54

My Ds is the same age and just the same. Its awful isnt it?
I darent take him to clinic to get weighed some weeks cos hes so black and blue!

nickschick · 15/03/2009 20:57

When ds3 was about 2 i went to a&e 6 times in 4 weeks with him and cuts and bumps to his head- one time i was half way thru having my hair cut and the assistant took him with her to the shop and he fell - the hairdresser shut the shop and drove me to the hossie- i was getting really quite worried and asked the nurse would they be informing the h.v....why? she asked well because we keep coming with him - trust me dear you couldnt make up these injuries she said looking at my half cut hair .

mm22bys · 15/03/2009 21:10

DS2 is older than your DS, but he always seems to have at least one bruise on his head! It got to the stage whenever we had to see a health prof I would feel it necessary to explain how he got his latest bruise...

It happens, I figure they can check out the rest of his body where touch would there are no bruises or any other untoward marks!

When do you take him to A&E though?

I was told to if he lost consciousness (never has) or if he convulsed (never has...)

sw1 · 15/03/2009 21:13

Thankyou all so much! I feel so much better.
Good to know its not just boys too!
I am not looking forward to the stares this week......he looks rather odd with a great big plaster in the middle of his head!

sw1 · 15/03/2009 21:16

mm22bys we went to A&E as the blood loss was rather shocking and he needed stiches. I think if its a bump and they are not sick, dizzy, lose consciousness, not themselves, then I wouls always go.

sw1- in my long experience of head wounds, they always bleed masses! The worst was the day my two older ones were sitting in a nice hot bath, and my daughter kicked her big brother backwards (he was about 6 at this stage, she about 4). He slid into the tap and cut his head at the back in the hair. You should have seen the blood! Did I mention it was a warm bath? And how far a little blood goes in a bath of water? Answer: a long way...

I steri-stripped that one at home. Just hope he never goes bald, as I'm sure he will have a very characterful head.

worley · 15/03/2009 21:28

lol at dutchesse and the very characterful head, the back of dp's head is like that, lots of little bald bits where he has cut his head of his brother threw somthing at him and cut him.
i remember my friends mum talking to my mum one summer holiday and telling her how she had had to take a different child to A&E each week through out the holidays.

nickschick · 15/03/2009 22:52

My eldest ds was 4 and we fell off bus his head pooooooooooooooooured with blood and it was awful - the bus compny paid out £500 for it lol if hed have been a girl it would hve been more .

solidgoldbrass · 15/03/2009 22:56

My DS is 4 now and generally has a dozen or so bruises on knees/legs/arms and fairly frequently one on his head - active DC do get bumps and bangs, but SS know there is a different pattern to the injuries when they are being deliberately inflicted.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 15/03/2009 23:03

I didn't dare open the door to the HV last time she came as dd2 had a bruise above hr eyebrow where she tripped over her feet, a black eye where she opened the cuboard door onto herself and a graze on her cheek where she fell out of the cot during an escape attempt. Dd1 had several bruises of unknown origin on her legs and arms and a huge gash under her chin where she tried to climb into the washing basket.

I was conviced she would have thought I'd been beating my children

We have been to a and e several times too. Dd1 often blames me
