I've namechanged because I'm sure I'm going to get called allsorts here ...

But my friend called me about an hour ago crying. I asked "what's wrong?" and she replied "I've lost BigBum"

I said "what??"

and she snapped "The Guinea Pig!"

So I did my best to console her and everything. She's just phoned back, she'd stopped crying and was feeling much better. But when she started going on about the guinea pig by name I had a huge lump in my throat and my voice was strained. Just the name makes me laugh so much especially when she uses it in such serious context eg:

"This morning, I said to DH that BigBum does not look well ... DH said BigBum never looks well ... " etc etc

When she heard my voice go funny she said "aww, are you crying now too?"

I had to rush off the phone. I feel AWFUL. I'm not laughing at the more guinea pig and my friend didn't catch on that I was laughing but DH keeps making me feel really guilty!

Am I truely awful for laughing?

When you go to the vets, though, they call the animal by its name with your surname.

So they'd have called out "BigBum Jenkins" or whatever when it was his turn for his appointment.

My Mum just adopted a cat and was told that it was called Todger.

Cue much consternation and repetition of my favourite joke as a child (see below).

Luckily it turned out it was actually Tadger. Not much better though.

Old lady has a house called Hairy Bum and a dog called Willy. One day the dog goes missing and she can't find it so goes to the Police Station to say "I've looked all over my Hairy Bum but I still can't find my willy."

My mother called her cat - ahem -

Lickie Wah Wah

Because he couldn't really miaow, just kind of do a little 'wah' noise.

Thank all the gods the little fecker never went out as there would have been NO way I'd have shouted that through the streets

I'm laughing too, imagining the conversation in the vet's offices. "BigBum needs 50cc of saline. How is BigBum looking? What are BigBum's vitals?" etc.

PMSL at this thread... i'm very ashamed of my perfectly sanely named pets, perhaps I should rename them?

A lady I worked with took one of her two dogs to the vet and found the vet looking at her warily.

It transpired that the notes said "Be very careful of lady."

She had to explain that Lady was her other dog, at home and quite well.

I have just read through this thread and am now crying laughing - problem is I am at work and I am now getting VERY odd looks from my co-workers (one of whom is the DH!!). .
My great aunt did have a cat called Pussy - cue much hilarity from friends and family (although my aunt didn't see what was so funny!).

Oh, by the way I forgot to say YANBU - you will probably be considered a fab friend because it probably sounded like you were very sympathetic

That reminds me of the time I heard my neighbour hysterically screaming in her front garden. I looked out of the window and saw an Argos delivery driver stood by her gate looking white as a sheet. So I went out and asked her what was wrong. In between the sobs and screaming (she actually wet herself too), I heard 'knocked the door off it's frame, landed on..., is she dead, is she dead'!!! I could see her DS in the living room watching Cbeebies completely unaware of his mother's ranting but couldn't see her DD. Of course I naturally assumed her DD was squashed under the bloody door and nearly fainted myself. Then I pulled myself together and asked if anyone had called an ambulance. The Argos delivery driver looked at me as if I was deranged and said...........

'Why would you need to call an ambulance for a squashed cat'?!!!

I was so relieved I started laughing

As you can imagine my neighbour was not pleased with me!!!

AlistairSim and the cat boxes (and I speak as a devoted cat-lover and current owner of 1 dog & 3 guinea pigs).

We had a cat called Pele (after the great footballer) when I was in primary school. I wrote a 'what I did on my 'olidays' kind of thing about him and my teacher went through the whole bloody thing and crossed all the 'l's. She thought he was called 'Pete'. She said 'Pele' was a very exotic name. Imagine if we'd called the cat BigBum

MIL's dog is called Fanny believe it or not. I cringe when I hear her shouting it down the garden, especially when she adds "Adams" onto it:

"Fanny ... Fanny, where are you? come on now ... come on Fanny Adams"

Were there a lot of cats called Pele in the 60s/70s, or do I know you, Grumpy??

Lancelottie

I would imagine there were a lot of Pele cats!

You may know me if you're a Yorkie.

I've just remembered another cringey animal name thing:

I was recounting to some people how we had a cat when we were very small named Barnsley. My mum named him Barnsley because he smelt (my mum is a snob....). Of course, the people I regaled with this little gem were from Barnsley.
