To expect the website for medised to at least have a warning about the new guidance!

I had heard that there were new guidelines about medised published from a thread on here so looked at the Medimums websites which is bascially the medised website.
www.medimums.co.uk/
There was no new guidance. So I found this on a google search

On 28th Feb MHRA issued new guidelines for medicines for children.

www.mhra.gov.uk/NewsCentre/Pressreleases/CON038902

Basically no medised for under 6s

Out of interest I have been keeping an eye on medimums website to see if they changed the guidance...

So far almost two weeks later nothing...

Well i rang the "helpline" for medised and was reassured not to panic as they are allowed up to 12 mths to change packaging etc. "Fair enough I said...but it only takes 10 mins to add a notice to a webpage cos thats where busy mums who have heard on the grapevine about the changes will look!"

She couldnt understand my point!

AIBU for a huge pharmecutical company to at least put a notice on their website FGS!

I tried to buy a bottle last week and was told they had changed it to age 12 and over.
YANBU, if theyre going to change it, at least publish correct guidelines.

  1. As there are no specific safety concerns with these medicines, companies will be allowed to ?sell through? their products. In the meantime these medicines can still be used but it is preferable that people follow the ?best practice? advice.

from the press release you just quoted

onadietcokebreak · 14/03/2009 08:30

When they say sell through they mean not remove from shelves because of packaging.

They should at least publish the the correct guidelines. Its not difficult to change a webpage!

No they don't mean remove from shelves.

There are many many many products affected. MOST of them are available on open shelves at teh supermarket. These will not be removed from the shelves....but when existing stocks are gone there will be no mre.

I have posted on other thread - not 100% sure how it works with the OTC meds like medised. The pharmacist may start to control sale to under 6's (their parents obviously!) - but I don't think this has been advised by the MHRA.

Given that the MHRA have stated "In the meantime these medicines can still be used but it is preferable that people follow the ?best practice? advice" Medised have not actually done anything wrong ATM. In fact the quicker the stocks get used up the better in some senses IMO.

SlightlyMadScotland · 14/03/2009 09:03

However the MHRA also say that the risks are not so severe that they are pulling immediately therefore (If I used the stuff in teh first instance) there would be no issues using up a bottle...therefore there is no compulsary need to issue a warning which is essentially only relevant to those who have half a bottle at home.

YABU.
Medised kept me sane with my under 5's yrs ago.

They are just being extra extra careful but most people have safely used it on over 6's to0 no harm!

Dillydaydreamer · 14/03/2009 13:55

YABU but I can see why.
I have medical knowledge and can make my own informed clinical decision. For many websites are needed to remain informed.
Medised is not dangerous, only its effectiveness and fit for purpose is in question. However, I used medised well before guidelines changed with my dd1 and no harm came to her and I found it very effective with bad colds due to the decongestion componant of it. The relaxant helped her to sleep and helped to suppress the coughing.
I have avoided using it since Nov with dd2 due to the change in guidelines, however, after months of her coughing and having tried everything else, I turned back to medised which quickly improved things. My judgement is that it has been effective and I will continue to use it if necessary unless its safety is questioned.
Advice does not say it cannot be used, just that medical advice should be sought first.

YABU, and so are the people who changed the guidelines. Now I don't have a label I can rely on. DS is almost 4 and I'll have to just pretend he is 6 when I read the dose advise on the label.
