to think it shouldn't be up to the neighbours dog to set my curfew?

I've just moved into a maisonette, not actually in yet but we're still doing lots of sorting and round there all the time. We are the last house on the walkway up to it and there's no other way into my house. The neighbours own a husky which they tie to the balcony outside their front door and sleeps on their mat.

My partner stayed late one night to sort things, went to leave and the dog wouldn't let him! It stood on it's back legs growling and barking at him. He had no food in so had to have weetabix, donuts, breadsticks and nuts for tea. It had been placid during the day.

Since then it has randomly been so placid you could pull it's tail (not that I'd put it to the test) or so agressive we can't pass. I was really angry at the girl next door but couldn't get past the two men who were in my way to say something, after the dog went for one of my friends she said "it's just because he doesn't know you"! WTF does she want me to do? Introduce all my friends to her dog??? We have told them when we're going to be in and out with moving but they've not put the dog in.

We're not allowed dogs because we don't have our own access, I wasn't going to say anything to the HA but since it's decided that I have to introduce my friends to him and can't leave after dark I've had to tell them, I'm scared it'll bite Tink I love dogs, I'm not fearful of them and she has had good experiences of them, I'd hate for her to lose that. The dogs she knows are dopey and she might think this one would be.

The first night, before we started moving the furniture I left them a note telling them we were going to be moving next day and could they move their bikes from my door step so they didn't get broke or hurt someone and that I would need the area outside my house to store our bikes. What did they do? Move it further into my part! Where is my partner's bike? In my hall!

I'm ranting more than anything, I think.

Yep ranting. Flounce and come back moaning .

If the dog is making life difficult, could you get an H.A. person to come to the maisonette on some pretext, such as checking everything is O.K. with it, not mentioning the dog, and hopefully the dog will growl at them. Then it's up to them what they do about it, and it doesn't look as if you are complaining directly. Tied up outside all day sounds a miserable life for a dog. Will you also have the pleasure of it weeing and pooing around your front door, and how long will it be before it gets cleared up, and properly disinfected?

Sadly, too many people won't do something for the sake of good neighbour relations until a dog actually attacks somebody. I wonder if the maisonette had been turned down by anyone because of the dog, before you were offered it? Might give you a bit of leverage if life becomes more difficult, and you need to build a case for the dog, and /or its' owners to be re-housed. It might sound horrid, but keep a diary of every incident, dog-related or not, when they are interfering with your quality of life.

DWP?

HecatesTwopenceworth · 13/03/2009 16:54

tdwp - she's not the first and she'll not be the last. It doesn't matter.

TB - complain. Make things happen! You haven't even moved in yet and there's trouble. If you don't act right away, you are going to have a SHIT life there.

You are not allowed to have a dog just because of access issues. But this other neighbour is allowed to have a hulking brute?
Why can't she shorten the chain a bit? Is the dog out there all the time?
I would contact the H.A people and not tell them about it.
If all else fails just carry a big stick.
Sounds like you have got some unthinking neighbours

JaneSeymour · 13/03/2009 17:06

If she dobs on them though won't that make her a target for them? This is really difficult and v depressing. Sorry to hear about it.

Devil did you actually mean that then? I couldn't believe you could be so horrid.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 13/03/2009 17:07

call rspca if you think the dog is not bdeing looked after and causing you not to have access

raindroprhyme · 13/03/2009 23:01

from what you say dog sleeps outside?

We have a husky (Siberian), he is tied up outside in back garden to sleep but has a kennel. When we spoke to RSPCA they said he could be tied up outside as long as he had shelter.

Huskies run it is what they are bred for so can' t be let off the lead. So he needs to be tied up or he would do a runner.
But on the front mat sounds a bit dodgy.

Siberian huskies are known for being very disloyal and would lick a intruder to death as apose to bite them. They are bred to be be people dogs.
Alaskan huskies and other malmute type dogs do tend to be a bit more loyal to owner and territory.
Just wanted to make sure all huskies didn't get a bad name

I've lost this post twice and I'm typing one-handed with Fifi asleep on me! Try again:

I have told the HA, if it had been a nice quiet dog just getting some air on the path then I wouldn?t for all the reasons been mentioned, but I can?t put my daughter at risk (or my friends, but they?re adults and can look after themselves ). I work for the HA as a Resident so I know who to talk to and trust them, and there is a lot of work going on on-site (2010 stuff to those that know what I?m talking about) so it?s quite feasible that someone will have seen it.

It is using the balcony as it?s own toilet, I?ve not seen anything so I don?t know what they do but I have dirty paw prints on my window and Tink ran out after her dad one day with no shoes on and her socks were disgusting when she came in ? she didn?t go far either! As we?re in the only property in the block with no balcony or garden I?m going to see if they will let me put a gate on my end of the entry to make a balcony.

The lead isn?t that long, the houses are double fronted and about 4 ½ m wide, it?s tied outside their door and can just reach my stairs window. When it lies down the lead doesn?t lie on the floor which worries me that I might catch my crutch in it (so yes, I do carry a big stick ). It?s not there all the time, it goes out late afternoon ? when someone comes in from work maybe? ? but it?s not there in the morning, we?re not sure when it goes in.

We get the impression that this family is a little paranoid (and considering their car was acid attacked last week possibly with good cause) they have CCTV on their balcony looking over the road and their garage has ?CCTV? written on it too. I think the dog is just another line in security measures.

Raindrop, I don?t know much about huskies but reading what you said sounded right for it?s split personality so I looked it up and I think it is Siberian ? also looked up Malmute, they do look alike
