To think that 'take a break', 'pick-me-up' and 'chat' are stupid magazines to have in a hospital waiting room.

I went to have an HSG in a small hospital today which specializes in fertility examinations and all they had in the waiting room was these magazines. They have stories like 'My ex slit my throat' and 'my babies were joined at the breastbone'! I am assuming that these are donated but, really, are they a good idea in a hospital!?

They are stupid magazines to have anywhere!

(sorry if said already, only skimmed read thread!)

gagamama · 11/03/2009 17:09

I love reading discarded magazines that I'd never actually buy! The more niche or naff the better.

poopscoop · 11/03/2009 17:13

agree 100% with the OP.

They are the most miserable, sad, deadly, doom and gloom sotry lines which are so depressing at the best of times, let alone in a hospital waiting room!

Bonnycat · 11/03/2009 18:29

agree with gagamama.
Best heading i have seen was "my womb went zoom" i kid you not...

My two favourite stories ever were in Take A Break though I can imagine they might not go down well in a hospital.

One was a woman who had radical surgery to remove a cancerous tumour on her vulva/vagina - the woman wasn't that clear on what they were going to do, as you will see.

Days after the operation her catheter was removed and she was allowed to go to the loo on her own. 'I reached down to wipe and all my fluffy bits were gone,' she said.

She was found sobbing by a nurse who allegedly said: 'Well, at your age (60) it's not as if you would use them much.'

Weirdly that cheered the woman up.

The other one concerned a man struck down by diarrhoea in Tenerife. His wife always took a good supply of carrier bags on holiday so luckily was able to make him a nappy out of an Argos bag. He was proudly posing for a picture.

I love a Country Life with a posh girl in pearls as deb of the week and ridiculously expensive houses

wasabipeanut · 11/03/2009 19:26

They suck. Take a book or a paper.

Ivykaty44 · 11/03/2009 19:26

Take your own book or magazine and then you don't have to read waiting room material Get a large handbag and keep your book of the moment in it and you are never without a read and dont mind the wait as you are suitable entertained

dilemma01 · 11/03/2009 19:27

I used to read bella, I used to like the short stories with a twist.

Ivykaty44 · 11/03/2009 19:27

Actaully I gave up reading magazines at the dentist due to alays getting to the gripping bit in the story and being called in to have my check

nickytwotimes · 11/03/2009 19:28

They are hideous mags.
NEVER read the mags on a hospital waiting room - they are awash with nasties.

FairLadyRantALot · 11/03/2009 19:30

LOl, tbh...those magazines are totally rubbish, not just in a Hospital waiting area...I always take my own book/magazine, that way I don't have to inflict that kinda shit on myself....lol....

Comewhinewithme · 11/03/2009 19:32

Did you ever see the story about the woman who couldn't stop having orgasams ?
She had to leave her childrens sports day early because she was distracting the children with her constant coming .

I agree though take a book .

warthog · 11/03/2009 19:33

well i took along a stack of new scientists to my last eye appointment to leave in the waiting room so there was something decent to read. by the time i left, they had all been nicked.

Ivykaty44 · 11/03/2009 19:33

I really like to read chat, take a break - when i go to my fairy godmothers (long story) she always has them and keeps them for visitors to read. I sit in bed at hers and have a good ole read

What is wrong with them once in a while?

themoon66 · 11/03/2009 19:34

i remember reading about some poor soul with ovarian cancer whilst waiting to find out what on earth was going on with my pregnancy. it kind of took my mind off it, but i agree not really appropriate.

Anglepoise · 13/03/2009 22:49

I won't have a word said against Pick Me Up. Though this does answer my wondering last night whether I should recycle mine or donate them to my nearest surgery!

I was in Take a Break once .

They approached me to publish my story.

I agreed once they had written it, read it back to me and emailed it to me.

Then they edited it and it was nothing like what I had said they could write.

I would never, ever read TAB again regardless of where it was.

was it you who designed the argos nappy????

We were in 'woman' mag in 1995!!! a 2 pge mothers day special.

scrooged · 13/03/2009 22:50

Would you rather we had copies of the Daily Mail?

kittywise · 14/03/2009 11:54

herbietea I was interviewed for the bbc news website recently. The same thing happened, what I actually said was so distorted, comments placed out of context as to completely change the meaning. I emailed the 'journalist' and made her change it.
I think that's what all journalists do regardless of how rubbish or lofty their their paper/magazine is, it's what they do.
