It bloody riles me, i don't know why, it just does

Do you get them right???

It really is not hard!

JazzHands · 10/03/2009 21:06

100% on test! Woohooo!!!!

MmeLindt · 10/03/2009 21:06

Thanks, Stealth. I will not call you a patronising cow if you explain if wont or won't is correct. I am always unsure.

StealthPolarBear · 10/03/2009 21:08

I thought I'd got that wrong somewhere
won't = will not
wont = custom, usual practice

hmmSleep · 10/03/2009 21:08

Ha, just realised I typed 'of' instead of 'off', told you I was a hypacrite!

StealthPolarBear · 10/03/2009 21:09

And now I'm going to stop posting as it's only a matter of time before I make a huge glaring mistake and everyone laughs at me
Night all

StealthPolarBear · 10/03/2009 21:10

hmmSleep, since I'm already being the pedantic misery that everyone loves to hate, I feel it my duty to mention that you're spelling hypocrite incorrectly as well

[think I've still got away with it]
[maybe]
[bedtime]

Jux · 10/03/2009 21:10

I got 100% too, but I know that when I'm on here I make mistakes. The amusing thing is that none of this grammatical stuff has ever been an issue for me - until I had spent time on mumsnet! Then I found, to my shame and horror, that I was making mistake after mistake!

There is reliable scientific evidence that exposure to misspelling can cause confusion over correct spelling, so I guess it's true for grammar too

angrypixie · 10/03/2009 21:11

Yes yes yes
The 'could of' 'should of' thing makes me want to gnaw my own limbs off!

Really must get out more

hmmSleep · 10/03/2009 21:14

Thanks Stealth, teachers used to write 'sp' in red pen on my essays all the time, my initials used to be SP so it took me a while to realise they were pointing out my terrible spelling!

Olifin · 10/03/2009 21:15

Yes, could of/should of and brought instead of bought= highly irksome.

Not sure about the lend/borrow thing though. Think that might be a regional thing, in which case it's allowed, I reckon.

Made2OrderJelly · 10/03/2009 21:16

Whilst i am here i will also mention that it annoys me when people say "can i have..." instead of "may i have..." (just for example)

Of course you can have something, but it doesn't mean i will let you have it. It's something quite stupid which bugs me

(oh and SPB you sound like a cave man when you said "I feel it my duty" )

(you nearly got away with it, if only you had resisted that one last post )

OP posts:
hmmSleep · 10/03/2009 21:20

I think the of/have thing comes from people saying could've which sounds like could of, so they write it incorrectly, it is annoying though.

Didn't realise the lend/borrow was regional, def. allowed if it is, I'm all for diversity. I thought you lent something to someone and borrowed something back.

TheYearOfTheCat · 10/03/2009 21:23

I also got 100% .

Whilst we are on percentages, it always irritates me when people claim to be 110% committed / interested / whatever. It doesn't make mathematical sense (as well as being a lazy way to express oneself).

Of / off.

Someone I know constantly types ammend.

[Must lie down]

MmeLindt - I think that won't is correct, as the 'not' is contracted.

wheesht · 10/03/2009 21:23

YANBU!

Is there a quiz on when to use lose or loose? That's another thing that drives me daft.

Made2OrderJelly · 10/03/2009 21:24

i bloody hate it when people say "that'll learn ya" instead of "that will teach you"

Also hate the lend/borrow thing "can i lend it you" (when they mean "may i borrow it from you")

OP posts:
Made2OrderJelly · 10/03/2009 21:26

wheesht here you are

I got 100%

My mum is always rattling on about people using 110%, it drives her potty

wheesht · 10/03/2009 21:28

Why thank you made2

Also can't stand when people add 'isn't it' at the end of every statement even when it makes absolutely no sense

i.e. "Those shoes are really lovely, isn't it?"

SweetestThing · 10/03/2009 21:30

Classic today on the tube.

Big advert on the wall of the carriage for Nivea for Men. Starts off with the words "Who would of thought...."

I have just emailed the company to point out their mistake and let them know the pedant brigade are on their case

wheesht · 10/03/2009 21:32

Made you look twice though sweetest

A bit like Picasso hanging his paintings at an angle..

Klaw · 10/03/2009 21:32

I never cease to be appalled at the poor grasp of English language some people have.

My son is 15 and constantly gets nagged about his use of how much/many. He cannot seem to get his head around when to use many and when to use much. He will NOT read and I blame it on that. He does not see the language in use enough. I read voraciously as a child/teen.

I hate being a nag

boogiewoogie · 10/03/2009 21:33

This belongs in the Pedants' Corner as someone has already pointed out.

Do you also get irritated if the mistakes are made by someone who is severely dyslexic?

SweetestThing · 10/03/2009 21:35

Call me picky, but I think a big company with a large advertising budget should at least get things proof-read properly

Made2OrderJelly · 10/03/2009 21:37

BW i didn't realise i was being a 'pedant'

And no, my sister is dyslexic, so often makes mistakes, i just point out her mistakes so she knows they are there.

I am not saying i am perfect, i am sure i make many mistakes, but the there/their/they're thing does bug me

And i won't know if someone posting on MN is Dyslexic to think "oh, that poster is dyslexic so it doesn't bother me"

boogiewoogie · 10/03/2009 21:38

Sweetest thing, do you also e-mail the tabloids to comment on the spelling, grammar and punctuation as their papers are constantly littered with mistakes?
