to want a tv when we move two hours away from all my friends and family

Me and my dp are moving to Newcastle to be near his brother who is undergoing treatment for cancer. It was my suggestion to move, although I could see it was what my boyfriend wanted to do. Anyway, in the house we live in at the moment there are loads of people (we share with a few friends) but in the new house in newcastle it will be just us, so I want to get a tv. He says I'm being unreasonable and should just watch bbc iplayer on my laptop like we do now, although I think that without any friends when I first get there, I'll need something to entertain me while he's at work and dd is busy sleeping or whatever. I hardly ever watch tv, even when I'm staying over somewhere that has a proper tv, but would like to have the option, and also quite fancy getting a wii. My only worry is back when we used to have a tv, he spent every evening and night playing stupid shooty games on his ps2.

Getting a tv would be entirely reasonable, but get a little one so he won't want to steal it for his games. You can get fairly portable sets that have built in DVD/CD drives too, these will have their uses.

YANBU.

What is his objection? Is it expense? Becuase you could probably get one for nothing on freecycle, people are always advertising tv's, inc portables, video dvd combis, full size, etc...

No, he says that i won't make friends, I'll just veg in front of the tv all the time. ALso he reckons it would be too easy to just stick dd in front of cbeebies all the time. I do suffer from various mental problems, so he is right that there's a risk of me vegging, but surely thats the same risk as me vegging with a book or the radio?

Get a tv and only watch it during the day- hide it beofre he gets home.

abbierhodes · 08/03/2009 21:52

TBH, I think he sounds controlling. If you want a TV, get one. You're an adult.

DeeBlindMice · 08/03/2009 21:55

How the fuck are you going to be out making friends when he is at work if you have a daughter?

He's being a pillock. If you want a TV, get a TV. Unless you can't afford one. Then don't get one.

Is he one of those tedious knobheads that thinks not having a TV makes you interesting, and bores on about how rich their life is and how much radio they listen to?

iPlayer is just telly, so obviously he has no objections to the content. Getting uppity about the box you watch it on is ridiculous.

YANBU

Agree entirely with blindmice.

ChippingIn · 08/03/2009 22:43

Lissy - I'm not sure how to say this without upsetting you.... so can I apologise in advance? If you have some mental problems and he's worried about you, do you not think his opinion might be more valid than a bunch of people on an internet site who don't know you?

What do your family/friends in your RL think?

My family are from Newcastle, Geordies are a very friendly bunch, you'll soon make friends if you just get out to a playgroup/few local shops!!

ChippingIn · 08/03/2009 22:44

Oh completely forgot to mention... I think it's lovely of you to move to be near your 'BIL' and I hope his treatment goes well x

NotAnOtter · 08/03/2009 22:44

agree chippingin

DeeBlindMice · 08/03/2009 22:46

So ChippingIn and NotAnOtter, you think his opinion is more valid than her own?

NotAnOtter · 08/03/2009 22:46

lovely you moving for dbil !

NotAnOtter · 08/03/2009 22:47

no but he knows her a lot better than we do and i am assuming he wants the best for her

I personally do not ever watch tv in the day and only very rarely use pc as i know it impacts on my mental health if i do

Ask on freecycle for one when you get there. YANBU at all. He's being an arse!
