To throw away two frying pans and a saucepan that I found mouse droppings in this morning

Dp thinks i am and WW3 has broken out this morning as i am now not able to make the pancakes everyone wanted for breakfast!

The most annoying thing is its because Dp has left open sacks of dry dog food in the pan cupboard that we have attracted mice in (we live in a rural area). Up to now I have been 'sterilising' things as best i can but it was the last straw this morning.
he moved the food a few months ago saying 'they won't come back now the foods gone'. i told him then that of course they would and please could he block up the hole int he back of the cupboard but he has not done it yet.

he has now stormed off but not before engineering a row about me being 'depressed' that i cannot make the effing pancakes'

Thank you for all the really helpful suggestions, I am going to go into town tomorrow and get some humane traps (can't bear the throught of poisoning them even if they do poo everywhere lol!)

Might give the polycell foam stuff a go (will come in handy for other jobs)as thats something I can do myself, If still no joy then will try the wire wool idea.

Am feeling annoyed now about the pans, On previous occasions have always given them a good scrub- just couldn't face an in depth cleaning session today lol!h

Yes YABU- it's only mouse droppings, for pete's sake. Just run them through the dishwasher!

spicemonster · 08/03/2009 13:10

If you get humane traps, I found the best thing to put in them is nutella - mice seem to really like it!

mimimilk · 08/03/2009 13:12

duchesse- we don't have a dishwasher I'm afraid- just me!

They also love peanut butter! Rural mice tend to leave the house in the spring, so beware that they may go soon anyway, but do not be lulled into a false of sense of security that you have beaten them. Leave traps or poison (somewhere inaccessible to children obv but where you know the pesky blighters are hanging out) permanently, even through the summer, and beware their return in the autumn!

duchesse · 08/03/2009 13:17

Oh, and if they don't have plastic handles, stick them in the oven to sterilise. But on the whole you're unlikely to catch anything from them.

RustyBear · 08/03/2009 13:24

At the risk of totally freaking you out, I'd point out that unless you routinely sterilize everything before using it, you can never be sure a mouse hasn't peed on it - when we had mice, I didn't find the poo at the back of the cutlery drawer until after breakfast....

Why is blocking up the holes his job not yours? Throwing away good pans that could easily be washed and dunked in some milton sounds insane.
If this was my house I'd say to bloke "we" need to do this and would sort out a trip to buy the stuff to block up the holes and get it done that day.
Throwing a strop because he hasn't carried out your orders like some hired hand, and chucking pans out sounds completely ott.

That was the time I found the mouse in my oven....

Pannacotta · 08/03/2009 14:10

You are bananas!
GIve the pans and cupboards a really good clean, very wasteful to chuck them out IMO...

Lenlen · 08/03/2009 14:12

spare the pans. just give it a good scrubbing until you feel it is already so clean.

LGoodLife · 08/03/2009 14:40

And humane live traps just mean the mice will breed and bring their babies back to the warm place with the food source -your Kitchen, so for goodness sake stop being a wuss and trap the blighters!
Isn't it against some byelaw or other to release vermin once trapped? ie you are knowlingly infesting some place?

Acinonyx · 08/03/2009 14:56

Isn't it amazing how much wee a few mice can produce? In one place I used to live that had mice - we used to pour the mouse wee out of the vegetable bowl in the mornings. Amazing.
