To set an 8pm bedtime for my year 4 child?

My 8 and a half dd says that I am. According to her all the other children in her class go to bed at 9. Is this true? I can hardly get her out of bed in the mornings as it is.

yr 3 and yr 4 ds;'s.. in bedroom at 8pm, lights out between 8.30 and 9pm.
Ds2 doesn't need much sleep, is always last to fall asleep and 1st to wake up, usually at 6am

Yr 4 DS goes at 8.30 on schoolnights, later at the weekend.

I never listen to any arguments that start "everyone else in my class ..."

ds2 is nearly 10 (yr5) but he still gets up early and needs a lot of sleep. He goes upstairs to bed at 6.30 and has an hour's lights on time for reading. So 'bedtime' is 7.30 pm.

dd is in year 4 and is in bed at 8. I just asked her what time most people go to bed (they had a discussion at school apparently) and most went to bed at 8, a few at 9 and one boy at 7 (and everyone laughed poor soul!).

I think you have to stamp on the "everyone else" line early. It's usually not true, and even if it is, it's irrelevant. You are the parent, you set the rules.

My two (8 and 9, almost 10) currently have a story at 8.30 and are in their own beds, lights off at 9pm. It was 9.30, but then ds asked if it could be a little earlier as he was tired, and the extra half an hour has made a lot of difference. Not just on them getting up in the morning, but on general levels of cheerfulness throughout the day. dd complains, but falls asleep pretty instantly (ds usually takes longer, which is why he was tired, I think). I thin it is quite important to go to bed before you are too tired in any case, as overtiredness can make it much harder to drift off.
