to not want my child to watch Ben 10, X-Men and the like at his nursery school?

State-run nursery - my child stays on 2 days over lunch and into the afternoon. After lunch they let the children wind-down in a physical play room with yoga mats. Would appear that the TV goes on most days - my child has spoken about seeing the Ben 10 movie - the lunch time staff seem to put on DVDs that the kids bring in - some of them have been PG films. CBBC is put on sometimes and my child has spoken about watching the new X-Men cartoon on CBBC - have just watched it online and it's a noisy/action-packed/fighty programme that I am not too keen on.

Children range in age from 3-5. Am thinking of speaking to the headteacher about it and just want to get a sense of what other people think. BTW it's a fabulous nursery - am pleased about it in every other respect.

TV at nursery? I wouldn't be happy about that either

NotAnOtter · 06/03/2009 23:19

i would be fuming

oopsagain · 06/03/2009 23:19

I wouldn't like it one bit- but i'm afraid you'll probably get flamed... the "it's my right for my kids to watch what i want them to- and if you don't want your kids to watch then ask nursery staff to remove them so my kids can enjoy themselves" brigade.

they'll be along soon, I'm sure

Then you'll be called uptight and m,iddle class no doubt.

seriously- I doubt there is anything you can do about it- but i think it is crappola.

VerynicenonacidicTits · 06/03/2009 23:21

If he is happy and it is a good nursery then a bit of tv wont harm him

SerendipitousHarlot · 06/03/2009 23:23

I can assure you, I'm nowhere near middle class, but I wouldn't expect them to have the telly on at nursery. That's MY job

VerynicenonacidicTits · 06/03/2009 23:28

Maybe the staff put it on so they can go and have a fag and a gossip

If your not happy speak to the nusery manager

I cant see why not wanting the tv on a nursery would make people come and shout middle class

NoTVlicencehere · 06/03/2009 23:30

This happened at my dds school nursery class too, well not cbbc but preschool stuff, I wasnt happy either

I have recently complained about how much tv the children seem to watch at my kids school (now in the infants) before christmas they watched a dvd all afternoon every day for the final week of term

No response from the school yet, I will probably take them out for the final week of each term if this seems likely to continue

Even though you are happy with the nursery in every other respect I would complain about this, (I wish i did about dds nursery) school is for playing and learning!

TV is for chilling out at home surely (although you will gather from my current nickname we havent got one as such!)

I don't watch much TV at all as I don't like it, but I don't think there is any harm whatsoever in children watching a little bit here and there. It can be useful in nurseries at times such as pre/post snack and meal times as the children are in one place with their attention held so that food and drink can be given out more efficently and safely.

As for Ben 10 - my DC (older than nursery age) watch it and although it's a bit OTT, lairy, noisy and bright for my tastes I don't think it has the 'kill! kill! die you triple headed purple smorgaton factor' that some children's programmes have.

I certainly wouldn't rate the Tweenies et al. any more highly.

oopsagain · 06/03/2009 23:36

sorry- i have ishoos

and shouldn't bring them onto here-
I take back the remark about the potential for people to call you middle class for not wanting your child to watch TV at nursery.

As you were

It's still rubbish

oopsagain · 06/03/2009 23:39

my ds2- 3yrs would be traumatised by ben 10
i do think it is inappropriate.

skramble · 06/03/2009 23:40

TV while they chill after lunch is fine, but I wouldn't be keen on these types of programmes, plenty other non violent stuff.

Nursery where I worked, used TV after lunch for the older kids 4-5 that didn't nap, only 2 staff on rest having lunch, 1 monitored kids, other cleared up lunch. Not a problem I think to watch appropriate programmes, the manager kept putting on power rangers, which we hated and it stirred up the kids not settled them, we kept changing video, One day manager had to stay in room while staff dealt with something and she actually saw the video and the effect. It dissapeared after that.

glasjam · 06/03/2009 23:44

I can just about live with the fact that they put a bit of TV on after lunch (not cock-a-hoop but OK with it) but I would rather they were a bit more responsible about what they watched. Maybe selected programmes or DVDs that would be more relaxing or interesting rather than the over-stimulating stuff and certainly nothing that is a PG certificate. CBBC is supposed to be for ages 7+ although I know in reality that my own child prefers it to the baby-ish CBeebies now. And parents haven't been consulted about bringing in DVDs it's been done very adhoc - I was pestered by my own child to bring in one his DVDs and he was aghast when I said he could take a Winnie-the-Pooh or Bagpuss one in - far too wussy and in all honesty knew he wouldn't go for it!

Will talk to the Headteacher on Monday. Thanks for all comments.

Ds gets to watch videos at after school care. I don't have a problem so long as they are age appropriate and he can choose to do something other than watch tv. Scooby Doo seems to be the favourite amongst 4 yr olds!

thirtypence · 07/03/2009 01:59

The TV is okay, but at that age ds would have been very content to watch Thomas the Tank Engine or something very innocent.

He's now 6 and has no idea who Ben 10 is. I don't suppose it helps that here it is pronounced "bin tin".

I don't think they should show anything that isn't a G or a U because they are not providing Parental Guidance are they - they are clearing up from lunch.

MilaMae · 07/03/2009 07:43

I'm shocked about Ben10 to be honest my boys are 5 want to watch it but spend most of the time hiding in the kitchen-it's quite scary. There are so many other lovely things they could be watching.
