to think that I should at least have been examined by the Nurse?

This is not in any way life or death but I went to the doctor yesterday and was seen by the Nurse Practitioner.

I went thinking I have got thrush down below and, I suspect, in my mouth. (Makes me sound lovely, doesn't it?!)

The thing is that the Nurse listened, said it sounded like thrush and gave me cream. At no point did she examine me, or even look in my mouth.

I could have gone and got the cream myself from the chemist if I had been sure it was thrush and not wasted their time. The point of going was for someone who knew about these things to confirm it.

Does this seem weird to you? POV of GP's and Nurse Practitioner's particularly welcome.

thrush doesn't always have visible symptoms and I am sure that she sees enough cases to be able to diagnose with the information you had given her.

but you know, you could always have asked her to take a look

agree with thisisyesterday. did she give you treatment for your mouth?

philmassive · 05/03/2009 10:36

That was quick!

Thanks for your comments, I did actually say to her 'when you examine me', assuming that she would and truthfully I felt embarrassed when she didn't so I didn't want to say it again (also in truth would rather not be examined but thought it would be necessary)

No treatment for the mouth at all.

Sounds like I ABU though!

I don't understand why she hasn't given you treatment for your mouth. I would phone the GP and ask.

I'm inclined to go back and ask to see a doctor to be honest, but wary of being seen as a time waster.

They always seem to be fob you off with the nurse practitioner unless you've booked weeks in advance. She is nice but I have lost a little faith in her since she failed to notice I was suffering with pneumonia last Summer!

yes I think you should go back. It's false economy for the practise to employ a nurse who then misses things, meaning you have to be seen a second time by the GP.

You can ask your pharmacist to have a look at your mouth and get thrush treatment over the counter at the pharmacy. Save you having to wait for a docs appointment.

I've had thrush in my mouth a few times and always needed antibiotic mouth lozanges to clear it up and to be seen by the doctor. I think you need to go back.

I didn't always use to examine women who attended with possible thrush (was a practice nurse) as often women were too sore for a vaginal examination, the symptoms described sounded classically thrush-like, or often the treatment would have worked by the time we got a swab result back so it didn't really tell us anything we didn't already know IYKWIM.

She should have at least looked in your mouth though.

JazzHands · 05/03/2009 21:23

I saw GP recently for thrush and he wrote the prescription without examining me.

However I'm surprised she didn't look in your mouth - it's not exactly tricky and I'm sure thrush in the mouth is more unusual while most women can be fairly confident when they have vaginal thrush (unfortunately).

And no treatment for it doesn't sound right either.

Like basically she ignored the mouth thing and just treated the obvious? Maybe she didn't hear you say you had it in your mouth as well?
