I suspect I might be, especially if I feel I could offer the poster help. I just cannot bring myself to

diedandgonetodevon · 02/03/2009 22:12

No YANBU. I can never be bothered to fathom what the hell the poster is trying to say and just ignore the thread.

itchyandscratchy · 02/03/2009 22:13

I've known posters to reply to OPs like this with "btw you might want to cut the text speak out as lots of poeple find it hard to understand it" or something like that, together with a grin or smile so it doesn't offend! (and I've also known v.rude replies too!) But no, YANBparticuarlyU as it's horrible to read in a paragraph

Mumcentreplus · 02/03/2009 22:15

let the judgification begin....

Trinityrhino · 02/03/2009 22:17

I have real trouble but sometimes feel they
really need the help

I mean they cant spell so I may as well help them as much as I can

Twims · 02/03/2009 22:17

YANBU I often find I can't read or understand txt speak and I'm not old at all also think paragraphs help.

saadia · 02/03/2009 22:19

YANBU, I just can't take it seriously, seems almost jokey, and lack of paragraphs hurts my eyes and makes it difficult to understand the thing properly.

Mumcentreplus · 02/03/2009 22:20

lies...if you were'nt old you wouldn't care..hahaha

cheesesarnie · 02/03/2009 22:23

i dont really understand text speak-or if i do it takes ages for me to get it!so i give up half way through if im honest.
what thread?where????

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 02/03/2009 22:24

Mumcentre if I was scared of the response then I would just have put this in pedant's corner.

I'm asking a genuine question. I believe that you should communicate in a manner appropriate to the medium. There are phrases I might use while talking that I wouldn't write down, for example. It's not as if MN has a limit on characters in a post!

Trinity you have a point, maybe I should reply and assist where possible

Itchy I have thought of doing that, but I suppose I am wary of offending!

Cheese now that would be telling

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 02/03/2009 22:25

no, YANBU really - if it's all txt spk and no paragraphs it gets really confusing to understand sometimes.
Plus I do worry that they have big hairy feet, sometimes.

Ronaldinhio · 02/03/2009 22:27

I'm waay too stoopid for text speak yanbu

2shoes · 02/03/2009 22:28

yanbu

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 02/03/2009 22:30

No - there was one yesterday which had no text speak but it was a long post with no paragraphs and I couldn't read past the first couple of lines.

cheesesarnie · 02/03/2009 22:30

aww go on

Mumcentreplus · 02/03/2009 22:31

who said you were scared?...old = scared? hahaha ...all communication is flexible is all I'm saying...if I wanted to answer a post text speak wouldn't stop me thats for sure!...

Mintyy · 02/03/2009 22:32

Not unreasonable exactly, no.

But I do think it would be nice if we could cut new posters a little slack sometimes. I can't think of the wording to post without being horribly condescending, but surely something along the lines of:

"You are probably unaware of this but posters who write in text speak or post very long rambly messages tend not to get a good response on Mumsnet. There is an unspoken rule on this forum that text speak is not used. People are keen to help but like to be able to read your messages easily ..."

is nicer than just ignoring someone or slagging them off for being illiterate (as I have seen this evening).

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 02/03/2009 22:37

Minty I've seen the thread you're refering to, and things have got pretty out of hand over there.

Mumcentre - who said I was old?

OP posts:
Mumcentreplus · 02/03/2009 22:39

hehehe

Qally · 03/03/2009 00:26

Mumcentre, I know quite a few teenage pedants! They loathe textspeak.

Not unreasonable, no. If you don't use it then it's irritating to read - and actually I don't get why people do use it these days, what with predictive texting.

Mumcentreplus · 03/03/2009 00:30

'Pedants' being the operative word!..lol...all I'm saying is if I can understand it I will comment...

Mumcentreplus · 03/03/2009 00:32

and Predictive text is a bitch!...or a bhubg..lol

Qally · 03/03/2009 00:45

You sound like my DH. He can't get the hang of pt at all - swears at the phone, is convinced it's demonically possessed. It's very funny.

Mumcentreplus · 03/03/2009 00:51

lol..my Dh laughs at me all the time
