To think there is a nationwide epidemic of chicken pox?

Everywhere i go i see "poxy" kids!!! There is a notice up in playschool that various children have it. I see them in the park, in the shops. OK, so its localised. But yesterday we go out to hastings, a two hour drive from us, in the next county and what do i see - "poxy" kids on the fairground rides!!

Am I just noticing it more because i have a DD of the age who is likely to contract it - I am very hey ho about it, and if she gets it she gets it. (might stock up on calomine lotion though, in case people start panic buying). Is it that CP usually is rife at this time of year, or is there actually an epidemic, and if so - why?

I think there is, its going through our playgroup here in Edinburgh...just waiting for DD to get the spots now.

TheCrackFox · 01/03/2009 11:00

Fanjo (didn't realise you lived in Edinburgh too), both my boys had it over January. Glad it is over and done with TBH.

Does seem to be an epidemic in Edinburgh.

handbagqueen · 01/03/2009 11:01

My DD1 is 6 and not had it yet - I'm really dreading her getting it and have though of getting the vaccine, but still not sure about it as it is new here in the UK. Is it worse if they get it once they are older (7yrs +)?

CrushWithEyeliner · 01/03/2009 11:03

lots of it about in London at the mo

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/03/2009 11:06

Yes it was everywhere in Edinburgh over Xmas, and I thought we had escaped it, but I suppose it's probably inevitable now, am dreading it as she has eczema so i have been told she might get it badly.

ChippyMinton · 01/03/2009 11:09

it's the time of year

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 01/03/2009 11:10

DS has it, it's been round his gran's playgroup and think his nursery probably has it too; so there's obviously some going round the North East! Though have not noticed many people out and about with it.

Hope your DD is OK Fanjo... we have been lucky, DS is very spotty but doesn't seem to have felt poorly at all so far, so hope you will be the same.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/03/2009 11:11

Thanks MNIIM - she is actually sneezing today so it could be the start of it...

Mummyfor3 · 01/03/2009 11:15

Chicken pox is always endemic - but more so in the winter.
DS1 and 2 had the dreaded pox last year; DS3's recent hugely high temperature which I expeceted to turn into chicken pox turned out to be the world's worst ear infection - ear pouring pus and all .
I remember my own chicken pox fondly, infected by my brother, I was not v unwell, not v itchy, but spent 10 days off school in October and made(!) all my Christmas presents for that year . Sadly, I have never been that organised again...

welshdeb · 01/03/2009 11:16

Its the time of year, my dc all got it early spring. M
y younger ds wasn't around when the other 2 got it and we went to playgroup and did St David's day crafts (1st March) there was an infectious child and about 30 kids plus sibs and parents caught it.

yes, thats a point, wouldnt it be kinder for my DD who starts school in september to get it next year so she can make herself feel better about being poxy by having time off school!

Not here, alas. East Norfolk. I would desperately like 2 youngest DC to get it over with, but no such luck. I have even asked people to come around with their spotty kids but no luck.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/03/2009 12:03

It would be nice if dd who is 9 were to catch it soon. Have heard of 3 cases locally.
need to send dd to the local playschool for a few days I think

Sunflower100 · 01/03/2009 12:40

Loads here. Stressful if you are pregnant!

ADealingMummy · 01/03/2009 12:42

Lots of children here in Kent have chicken pox . My 2 yr old DD hasn't caught it yet.

Ashantai · 01/03/2009 20:36

Still waiting for my 5yr old to get it, despite it going round! I just want to get it over and done with!

thederkinsdame · 01/03/2009 20:37

Lots of my DS's toddler peers have had it recently, so much so that whenever we have chicken for dinner he says 'mmmmm chicken pox'!

BCNS · 01/03/2009 20:40

well we have it.. and obviously lots of others in the somerset area have it too.. as the chemists are running low on calmine, witchgel etc. .. ho hum

gingernutlover · 01/03/2009 20:42

yep we have cases at the school where i work and my dd is off nursery at the moemnt along with another 8 out of her class of 20! I have heard of other playschools where it is goign round and schools too, maybe its the time of year, at leats she wotn egt it again

we are in kent

dragonbutter · 01/03/2009 20:43

my boys have just had it. in devon.

staranise · 01/03/2009 20:49

My DDs have just had it, one after the other (DD1 is still off school with it), in SW London. DD2 was v mild but DD1 has it quite nastily despite the fact that she was vaccinated against it (standard practice in Spain where she was born) - so I wouldn't bother with the vaccine IMHO...

It is rife in our area at the moment and I am fed up with it - nearly three consecutive weeks of being stuck in the house with poorly children, plus a 14 week old baby who has to go to hospital if he gets it, according to our GP. Fingers crossed the bfing gives him immunity...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/03/2009 22:11

Interesting that you say that one of your dds is immnunised. 2 of the cases I've heard about the kids had it previously. I know kids can get it twice but I thought that it was quite rare. I wonder if the virus has drifted slightly (pure unfounded speculation)

mumotwo · 01/03/2009 22:28

Its here too (Belfast), my nephews nursery is rife with it. He is very poorly and on high strength steroids so its very dangerous if he contracts it. And even though the other parents of the kids in his class have been told about his condition, some have (selfishly) still sent their kids in infected.
