To not leave my DS (3) at a birthday party on his own?

I asked MIL to have DD while I took DS (nearly 4) to a birthday party next weekend. She looked at me with complete confusion and asked what I would be doing while she's got DD and DS is at the party. When I told her I would be staying with him she looked very at me and said she didn't understand why!

The party is in a pub (a bit strange for a 4 year old's party but each to their own I guess!), DS has never been there before and the majority of the other parents will be staying.

I've just returned from a childs 5 year old birthday party, in a local village hall. And only a couple of parents left their child, but did ask someone to watch them.

I didn't dare leave mine, as to get to the loos you had to go past the open doorway to outside, straight onto a main very busy road.

I hav eyet to go to a party where more parents leave them than stay, and my child certainly doesn't feel confident enough without me there, even though all their friends are there

Generational I think - leaving children at parties was common when I was that age but everyone seems to stay til they're at least school age. Looking forward to those parties!!

I also wouldn't dream of leaving a 3yo alone at a party!

For those asking about the pub, no it's not a kiddy pub (Brewers Fayre etc). It's just a village pub in the middle of nowhere! I'm assuming, as someone suggested, that it's got a back room which will hold a bouncy castle or entertainer.

oh

how weird

wonder wy they didnt hire a hall

shame its not a brewsters one

agree you should stay with your ds as its in a pub

A a children's entertainer I expect the majority of the parents to stay with a child 3 years or under, unless they have agreed with another adult (who the child knows) will supervise. Children 4 and over can, depending on the personality of the child involved and the venue, be left quite happily.

I would not be happy to have a large number of unaccompanied 3 years olds at a party - they all need fairly constant supervision, from having a toilet visit through to sorting out their party food.

YANBU - perhaps your MIL has forgotten after all these years what she used to do?
