To wish my girlfriend would not scream whenever she saw an insect?

Whenever my girlfriend sees an insect she starts screaming really loudly and I mean really high pitched hysterical screaming.

She's just bought some guinea pigs and this seems to have caused woodlice and everytime she sees one she squeals really loudly and frightens the kids to death.

The other night I was on the PC and she was downstairs with the kids and all of a sudden I heard an almighty scream followed by 3 children screaming and banging and shouting. I wondered what on earth was going on and ran downstairs to find my girlfriend STANDING on the sofa screaming hysertically and the kids were flapping around screaming and shouting and pushing each other off te sofa and everything all because there was a small spider on the floor.

I know some people are scared of insects and I don't like spiders myself but I think this is really over the top and she's pushing her fears on to her sons and my daughter.

Having a problem with your girlfriend lately? You've also posted that she doesn't try with your daughter. (I mean this sincerely, not having a go) - is there something in the relationship that's worrying/upsetting you at the minute?

UnderCarpetBrushed · 25/02/2009 13:40

everything to be honest Iklboo

yanbu.

There's no need for hysterical screaming unless someone is coming at you with an axe and an evil look in their eye. (and then only if someone will hear your screaming and come to your rescue)

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 25/02/2009 13:50

YANBU.

I really really am scared of spiders (I don't know why) but have done everything within my power to make sure that my son doesn't see this.

I know it's an irrational fear so I can convince myself to keep calm for his sake for a few seconds while I distract him and get him out of the room.

Your gf needs to get a grip and learn to control herself. If she really can't then maybe she could try hypnotism??

Perhaps she really doesn't like creepy trolls crawlies.

fryalot · 25/02/2009 14:34

soupy! you are norty

Hawkmoth · 25/02/2009 14:50

YANBU. I love insects, except centipedes, which make me want to cut them into pieces and laugh.

My sister is arachnophobic, and only one demonstration of this was enough to set of months of night terrors in my DD. I was very .

HerBeatitudeLittleBella · 25/02/2009 14:53

Dump her the bitch

mrsruffallo · 25/02/2009 14:53

Leave her.

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 25/02/2009 15:04

It's very irritating. OK, if it's a genuine phobia then poor her because it's awful when you have a phobia, but how many - sorry, but it is usually women - put on this fake girlyness and do the stupid squealing, tottering, jumping and arm flapping?

eeeeeeeee spider,

eeeee my hair it's raining
eeeeeeeeeee barbie I haven't seeeeeeeen you for aaaages eeeeeeee .

I KNOW you know what I'm on about! It makes me want to SLAP them.

LucyEllensmummy · 25/02/2009 16:03

Yes, she absolutely is transferring her fear onto her children. I was never frightened of spiders as a child, so my mother used to take advantage of this and make me sit and watch them and tell her if they moved, she even kept me up really late at night until my dad came home from nightshifts. Then one day - one moved - and I got shouted at . Absoulutely terrified of spiders now - BUT i curb it when DD around. In fact im OK with them as i get older - until they move!

LucyEllensmummy · 25/02/2009 16:04

hawkmoth - you are very very strange

Hawkmoth · 25/02/2009 16:25

Yes, it's true. Strangeness is inate here.

I was VERY wasp-phobic (due to being stung on the tongue when little) up until I started living on my own. I knew I couldn't live a whole life like that so I started taking an interest in bugs. Photographing them and finding out what they are, things like that. They really are beautiful and fascinating and I feel like a big strong girl when a wasp appears and I don't start having palpitations!

2rebecca · 25/02/2009 16:33

It's very unreasonable to do it in front of kids as it frightens them and makes them think small creatures are something to be afraid of. I'd tell her it's irritating, not the cute girlie trait she maybe perceives it to be.
I don't like large spiders and will sometimes let out an involuntary squawk if I suddenly see one, but that's different to persistent high pitched screaming which is completely unnecessary. Why stand on a chair rather than sprint for the vaccuum cleaner? (mine has a nice long tube so I can exterminate them without getting too near)

MitchyInge · 25/02/2009 17:10

she needs to pull herself together
