to be shocked that anyone buys ready made batter, let alone horrible cold ready-cooked pancakes

Pancakes contain eggs, flour, milk and butter. They require one bowl, one pan and one fork to make. Quick, easy, cheap and fun. Why would anyone want to pay for ready-made, heavily packaged batter or pancakes for tomorrow?

Is this the final proof that part of our population has lost all connection with real food?

Growing up I remember pancake day cooking better than any other evening of food. If kids don't see their parents making pancakes what hope is there that they will grow up feeling able to tackle cooking themselves?

I overheard a couple of women in town (watching the pancake races) saying that they bought ready made ones because the smell of cooking pancakes from scratch made them gag.

islandofsodor · 24/02/2009 13:54

It is the smell that puts me off I can not eat pancakes, the cooking smell is awful.

mm22bys · 24/02/2009 16:17

Right, the Tesco Man has been, he has brought me my eggs, and I've been to shops to get the flour.

Wish me luck....

Fairynufff · 24/02/2009 17:32

But what about the JIF LEMONS? Why not just buy..........a LEMON?

I bought ready made pancakes this year for the first time - couldn't face all the smoke and smell in our rented kitchen which has no extractor, and do you know what - the dcs ate much more than they do when I cook them

Clary · 24/02/2009 19:13

My pancakes don't rise ormirian...

I think I must be making crepes then.

We had them tonight with ice cream and melted chocolate and syryp and jam and sugar and lemon.

Not all at once. Well, not on my plate

kettlechip · 24/02/2009 19:41

YANBU but I remember microwaveable omelettes and jacket potatoes with beans being sold in my university shop.
Buying pancake mix isn't in that league of culinary incompetence imo..

MrsMattie · 24/02/2009 19:42

I like the readymade stuff for American-style pancakes, 'cause I can never get them right from scratch. But normal, English, lemon-and-sugar pancakes - well, they're a piece of piss, aren't they?

ScummyMummy · 24/02/2009 20:03

My partner bought Betty Crocker mix and I was v snooty and horrified as we usually make them from scratch. Have to say I couldn't taste the difference though...

SebbysMum · 24/02/2009 20:05

Someone asked about the reference to butter in my OP. Delia does put a little bit of butter in her pancakes which are definitely of the crepe variety (ie flat). I have made pancakes like that for years. I've also always put some butter on the pan.

This year I made my first ever American style pancakes (the ones that rise). I used the Jamie Oliver recipe which does not use any butter at all. The recipe worked well and they were lovely. Also, it struck me, very healthy.

Also, I think I mentioned cheap in my OP. Not, I discovered today, if you want maple syrup. As someone else pointed out price seems to have soared. £5 in Sainsburys today

Confession: when push came to shrove (geddit!) I couldn't be arsed.

Mercy · 24/02/2009 20:17

Have only read the op.

Yabu. Sainsbury's do French imported ready made pancakes (or should that be crepes?) which are better than my own home made efforts (you are welcome to try mine if you don't believe me )

Anyway my dc see me making plenty of other food so it's not an issue imo.

(btw a weighing scale is also required iirc)

Goober · 24/02/2009 20:21

I never use scales!
5 of us had many pancakes for tea.
Homemade.
I have 4 pans on the go.

queenceleste · 25/02/2009 15:35

FWIW, I made three batches last night and the kitchen was a total mess! Noble of me to home make but I was still washing up at 10ish.

queenceleste · 25/02/2009 15:36

Also they were'nt as yummy as last time I made them but my flour's best by date was Nov/08. I wonder if that made them less yummy?

Oblomov · 25/02/2009 15:45

yeah, yeah alright. so I bought ready made bater. add milk. shale it up.
God it is the best thing EVER.
And I made homemade macaroni cheese and beef stew and dumplings in the slow cooker today, so it is not as though I am inept. But some things are just too easy. Come on give us a break here.

unpaidworker · 25/02/2009 16:18

I love the packet mix. Yum.
