My sister just phoned me. Her baby (who was very prem and is now 9 months old) has got pneumonia. We thought it was Broncilitis again but it's pneumonia on her lung and behind her heart.

That little girl has been through everything from cardiac arrests to this, and she has almost died LOADS of times. She's a little angel.

Sister was crying on the phone as our nana recently died of pneumonia so she thinks her baby will die.

What are the chances?

I know this isn't the best section for this but don't know where to put it and I'm flapping.

IV antibiotics and she'll be fine.

DD had pneumonia was kept in one night.

Stefka · 21/02/2009 20:18

So sorry - what horrible news for you and your sister. I hope that the baby gets well soon.

blues2pinks0 · 21/02/2009 20:23

Don't have any medical knowledge - except what I've picked up through many trips to hospital with ds2. Just wanted to post as saw you'd had no replies.

Now the dr's have recognised how poorly she is she can be looked after - and if she has already been through so much she must be strong as an ox, and really have someone watching over her.

Your sister's lucky to have a sister to lean on. wishing you, your family and especially your niece all the best.

PottyCock · 21/02/2009 20:25

hope everything is fine for them mob - how stressful and poor little baby.

MumOfBaby · 21/02/2009 20:29

Thanks.

Eyeeye- I txt my sister what you said in th hope it'll make her feel better.

The baby is being transfered to another hospital in the morning. She does have bronchilitis, but that's a virus, and then the pheumonia aswell apparently which is scary. Her heart rate is 198 beats per minute. Is that a lot?

When DD was in hospital the nurse said that half the cases that had been admitted were pneumonia - they all recovered quickly.

She will be fine. Honest. It is a visceral reaction to the word Pneumonia .. it is treatable (very!)

Tell Sister it is not surprising she is worried but she will be fine. Been there. Done that!

jazzpants · 21/02/2009 21:59

my ds is 2 and has bad asthma, he had pnuemonia October, was kept in hospital o/n they treat with iv and antibiotics and steroids in ds's case, she will be fine - children are resiliant and continue to smile when the parents are worried x

chegirl · 21/02/2009 22:10

You poor thing and your poor sister and her poor little babes.

Of course you are worried and sad and tearful.

My DS1 had pnuemonia when he was about a year old. When the dr told me I nearly fainted (good job I didnt as I was holding DS at the time). He was fine in a few days and has no lasting probs. He is a great hulking 15 year old now.

Pnuemonia has such horrible victorian connatations (I know I cant spell but I have a great vocab ). Antibiotics clear it up now.

Pneumonia is very different in old people. I am sorry about your nana. Its often very hard to keep old people mobile and this is why its so serious in the elderly.

Of course its a worry when a little one is poorly but its a fairly common condition in babies and I am sure they will get it sorted out soon.

Unfortunately I have a lot of experience with very ill children. You would be AMAZED at how kids bounce back. One day they look absolutly awful and the next they are merrily chucking hospital food at the nearest doctor.

Best wishes to your little niece .

MumOfBaby · 22/02/2009 09:16

This all sounds very hopeful, I've told my sister and it's helping her to be posirtive.

Unfortunately the baby's been moved to high dependency now and put into an oxygen box. Hey Canyula collapsed her vein in the night but they've managed to move it to her other arm. Been updated that she has Bronchilitis and Pneumonia alongside lung disease and a hole in the heart (but the latter two are from being prem). If she manages to get over the pneumonia she'll be in for atleast a week, if not, then longer. Sister has been told to cancel her christening (two weeks time) and have her baptised in the hospital this week.

Which I think makes it sounds worse, I'd rather they hadn't said that to her.

But we're still all holding hope, she's shocked us hundreds of times before coming through things we thought she couldn't.

I wish you all the best.

mersmam · 22/02/2009 18:15

Any news yet? Your little niece and your whole family are in my prayers. xx

AnyFucker · 22/02/2009 18:21

so sorry to hear this

if the baby is in HDU, she will be getting excellent one-to-one care

antibiotics (which would be of no use to the bronchiolitis) should work well against the pneumonia

all my best wishes to you and your family, it sounds like that little tot has a hard fight ahead

MumOfBaby · 22/02/2009 18:42

She had an x-ray this morning and her lung has collapsed, but the pneumonia is responding to the antibiotics which is a good sign. She's still in the oxygen box at the moment, and she's very poorly, but she's now stable which is a relief as she was deteriorating all the time until this morning.

Thank you so much for the support and for saying she's in your prayers.

I'm trying to support my sister as best I can but I'm not allowed to go to the hospital as the staff said they can't risk infection getting in or out.
