It's freezing and the ice-cream van has been around and around the estate annoying people with its overly loud chimes. Is this it, every day, now until October?

Icecream van chimes have been heard round here on even the darkest and coldest nights - a testament to the icecream man's optimistic nature, I feel!

babyignoramus · 16/02/2009 09:26

Our ice cream man used to not only sell fags but would sell them individually to kids.

CrackerNut · 16/02/2009 09:28

We get a van come round here twice a day every single day.

Next door always go out to the van so I suppose he thinks it is worth it.

mm22bys · 16/02/2009 09:31

YABU, you will have loads of time to get used to it so you can just ignore it :-)

Picante · 16/02/2009 09:33

Ours came out in the terrible weather 2 weeks ago... snow cone anyone?

kslatts · 16/02/2009 09:39

YABU, the ice cream has to make a living even in the winter, ice-cream is nice at anytime of year. Our's also sells hot dogs.

Yes, it is illegal, I don't know about the whistling, that would probably come under sounding of horns etc. Heres the rules:

Code of Practice on Noise from Ice Cream Van Chimes etc. 1982
It is an Offence to sound your chimes so as to cause annoyance
Do NOT sound chimes:

  1. For longer than 4 Seconds at a time - use an automatic cut out device.
  2. More often than once every 3 minutes
  3. When the vehicle is stationary
  4. Except on approach to a selling point
  5. When in sight of another ice-cream van which is trading
  6. When within 50m. of schools (during school hours), hospitals, and places of
worship (on Sundays and any other recognised days of worship).
  1. More often than once every 2 hours in the same street
  2. Louder than 80 dB(A) at 7.5m (Contact the Environmental Protection Team for
advice)
  1. As loudly in quiet areas or narrow streets as elsewhere
It is an Offence Under the Control of Pollution Act 1974 to sound chimes;
  1. Before 12 noon and after 1900 hours
  2. At any time in a way which gives reasonable cause of annoyance

If you get the registration number, Environmental Health can investigate for you!

YANBU. Ours parks right outside our house and wakes up DS3 with its goddamm awful chimes blaring. And once I saw the icecream man smoking a fag putting it out then served kids ice cream cones without washing his hands . Tried to take reg plate to report him to environmental health but van didnt have a reg plate on display. Suffice to say we dont buy anything from them
