Yanbu,

there used to be times when a neighbour would be irritated by ds1 interrupting us, and being a teacher would say something quite stern. I always thought' thank goodness, ds might listen to you'.

Standing a little further back from the road next time might make you feel safer in case she does it again xx

tigerdriver · 14/02/2009 22:32

YANBU at all and it was really good to react as you did.

I had a really scary moment this morning when a small kid (about 7) on a bike flew into my path and we missed each other by about a second. Noone's fault, he was on a cycle path but my view blocked from someone as small as him by a parked car. I jumped out to make sure he was ok, as his dad was miles behind on the cycle path and dad and I had a civilsed chat and kid was ok but I think I might have nightmares tonight about what might have happened to him two seconds later.

one of those growing up things I guess for all of us.

I agree Flightisatwat - the way some idiots drive you're not even safe on the pavements these days and one little slip... I try to get ds(6) to stop before the bobbles - especially on his scooter.

dilemma456 you can't watch your child at every single moment. it'd be nice to live wantonly and kick my legs out when i feel like it like kids do spontaneously, but i would never think that a child doing that was one that wasn't being watched by their parent. sometimes it is ok to have other adults give life lessons. it takes a community to raise one child. i bet she won't do that again and maybe even think before doing other actions similar too.

mazbomb · 15/02/2009 20:27

Sounds like it was just a reaction from the driver. I wouldn't get worked up about it because some random stranger thinks you should.

womblingfree · 17/02/2009 13:54

Probably no bad thing. If your DD is anything like mine she'll no doubt take a lot more notice of shouty lorry driver than she ever will of mummy...

tootyflooty · 17/02/2009 14:04

what a change to hear from a sensible parent, some would be too concerned that someone had shouted at their precious child.
I have hooted at parents who's small children are messing around near the curb. And I have had to brake sharply to avoid a possible mishap
i think a telling off from someone else can have much more impact. The fact you backed the driver is all credit to you.

wotulookinat · 17/02/2009 14:05

Gosh, yes, I would have been shocked, but if that ensures that your daughter is really careful on the roads from now on, then what a great thing to have happened. As wombling say, she will probably pay more attention to what he said than what you say.

Meglet · 17/02/2009 14:12

YANBU, better for her to be scared of the man yelling at her than having a terrible accident. It will probably have sunk in and she won't do it again, the poor driver was probably pretty shaken too. Hope you're all ok now .

wotulookinat · 17/02/2009 14:15

Forgot to say YANBU.

mayorquimby · 17/02/2009 14:16

as someone said earlier on fair play for not being one of these people who think they are the only ones who can admonish their child regardless of their actions. many people would have flipped at the man, but you are being very very reasonable in recognising that A)he only did it because your daughter was very nearly badly injured
B)He would have gotten the fright of his life and was probably doing it out of his own fear about how he could live with himself if he'd hit a kid with his car.

wotulookinat · 17/02/2009 14:16

Indeed. Another perfectly-put point from the Mayor.

mayorquimby · 17/02/2009 14:22

wohoo i'm scoring big today.

wotulookinat · 17/02/2009 14:26
