To want to cancel my holiday??

Booked flights last year to go to Cyprus to stay in mil's apartment. Great times at local airport. Flying out 7am and fly back at 2.15pm.

Perfect!! Had an email from company to say flights have changed there and back. Would arrive there at 1am and fly back at 1.15am so travelling back through the night.

ould be fine for DH and I and the ds's but i really don't want to do it with the 2dd's who are 4.7 and 2.7

The others all want to go obviously.

Shall i just shut up and make the best of it or am i entitled to have a moan, given that i will be having them moaning at me when they re tired and grumpy?

Make the best of it.

moondog · 14/02/2009 14:38

Splendid.
It's only a few hours after all.

I go regularly alone halfway across the world with my two at all hours.Honestly,it's shit whatever time of day you go.Just accept it.

aGalChangedHerName · 14/02/2009 14:39

Have done night flights and hated it. They will both power nap travelling in the car and not sleep on the flight. I will be left awake listening to them while the rest sleep. That's why a day flight would have been easier.

I think i will force ask ds1 and his gf to have 1 dd and dh to have the other and i'll sit with ds2. That would be a much better idea, what do you all think?

wasaconventgirl · 14/02/2009 15:02

YANBU. the flight times make a big difference when flying with littlies.

moondog · 14/02/2009 15:10

Yes.
On rare occasions i fly with dh, we sit apart-me in peace ot sip wine and read, he to deal with the kids.

It's not a lot to ask as I am alone with them 80% of the time.

pocketmonster · 14/02/2009 15:11

When you've specifically booked conveniently timed flights (and probably paid more for them) it is annoying when the airline changes the time. So IMO YANBU to be a p'd off, but YABU if you cancel the holiday.

Trifle · 14/02/2009 15:17

There is usually something in the small print that says you are entitled to compensation if the airline change the flight by 8 hours+. Also, wouldnt you be losing a whole day on arrival. I know you are staying in your MIL's apt so it probably wont apply but most properties you have to vacate the room by 10am so would have to hang around all day waiting for a flight home. I too would be pissed off.

Frasersmum123 · 14/02/2009 15:58

What PocketMonster said!

paddingtonbear1 · 14/02/2009 16:11

when we went to Turkey with friends and their dd, the flight there was during the day/early evening but the flight back was 4am - we had to leave our villa at 2am to get there. It wasn't that bad, our dds coped fine - they slept a bit on the plane and then had a nap at home.
I can understand it's a pain but the holiday will be worth it.
I really hate flying but did it for dh and dd - dd sat with dh and watched a dvd!

aGalChangedHerName · 14/02/2009 16:28

I too look after my lot (althought dh doesn't work away like yours does MD) so i don't particuarly want to have them both next to me on the flight anyway.

Will ensure that they are farmed out on the flight and ds2 and i can read and blether and i can relax a bit.

Hmm will maybe ask about compensation, not wanting money, would just rather have the good flight times i booked.

I wasn't really going to cancel the holiday btw,it's probably the last family holiday with ds1 so looking forward to it too much to not go.

If you want a flight scheduled at a particular time, then you have to go with a scheduled flight.

Why do you think charter flights are cheaper?

aGalChangedHerName · 14/02/2009 16:59

Yes i do know why charter flights are cheaper If i had a loads of money then that would be a great option but i don't so i'll be travelling with the rest of the plebs who also didn't book a sheduled flight because they can't afford to pay for 7 flights.

I've done this with tinies and it was a pain but at least you do get an extra day each end. Just get yourself organised. See if you can get them to sleep for a couple of hours before you have to leave for airport, take some sort of pillows and blankets for airport and plane - they do have them but they get taken quickly - ask for them as you walk on plane if you don't have enough, night flights always feel cold. Be prepared to carry tinies (so don't take more hand luggage than you have to or put it in backpacks) and be prepared to put up with some winging - it is not for long and it will be worth it to have a lovely holiday together - lots of people won't have any this year.

Most of all don't let it spoil your holiday - hell you deserve it - ENJOY !!

aGalChangedHerName · 14/02/2009 17:13

Thanks champagne i will enjoy it. Have been before and really enjoyed it

Are you getting an extra day or do you lose a day by arriving so late? This happened to us last year with Excel. I think it is really unacceptable to change flight times like this. You buy a product in good faith and probably chose this airline because of the timings. Also, scheduled flights are changed as well, we were due to go to Naples with BMI and they changed their flight time (it wasnt a charter).

I find asking the airline when I am booking what timings have changed for the summer period over the last 3 years to give you an idea of what has happened over previous years. Surely airlines buy slots well in advance hence the fact that they can give you the times, what happens to change the timings, were they never there in the first place and was it a wild guess??

MaplePecanPlait · 14/02/2009 17:37

If you are anything like me the DCs will be fine but I would be the tired grouchy one!

Always vouch not to do even early morning flights but still do as cheap.
I would prefer to fly late in the evening rather than get up at 3am any day though.

nowwearefour · 14/02/2009 17:39

it isnt perhaps ideal but you are lucky to be having such a wonderful holiday. go. itwill be fine if a little tricky if they get grumpy. i just did 2 12 hour night flights and it was hard work but so so worth it for a wonderful holiday and such special memories.

Tiramissu · 14/02/2009 17:58

Gosh! i thought you are cancelling because you lost your job or something!! You cant be serious.

I have to travel a lot because our families are in diferent countries and most times alone with the dds.
I always book whatever is cheaper, i dont care about the time (i am so mean)

I m in Cyprus and travel often to uk or Greece or Italy. Uk is under 5 hours, is not as if you are going to USA

Just be grateful you can aford to go holidays and you have lovely appartment here waiting for you. I m sure many mnetters would love to have this opportunity especially this year that many families will have to do without holidays.
