You can normally still look nice with very little effort when you're young. Sadly it doesn't last. I dress much better now than when I was younger, but I didn't need to then, and I have to wear more slap now to stop myself looking grey and tired. When I was young I felt self concious about my figure. Wish I still had it now. Still, must tell myself that what I have now will seem great to me one day.

In an effort to make myself feel good, I decided a couple of years ago that all my clothes were for everyday. I am quite happy to wear my best silk dress and get baby food on it. If I spend loads of money on a garment, I'm bleeding well going to get lots of wear out of it, and not let it get eaten my moths in my wardrobe.

AnarchyAuntSaysRomanceIsDead · 12/02/2009 14:27

Its hard work looking as trampy as I do [huff]

OrmIrian · 12/02/2009 14:29

The only thing I regret about being older is that I can no longer get away with looking trampy. Once upon a time when I leapt from my bed and hauled on some jeans and a jumper and didn't bother with make-up I looked windswept, fresh and interesting. Now it's more bag lady .

mrshamiltiongiles · 12/02/2009 14:33

yes but i only wash my hair every 2 days so some days it looks a right state, i put it up in a poytail, and its all knotted.
i put my glasses on as i can't be bothered to wear my contcats, wear no make up, make no effort with clothes.
or nails or brows.

i think my hairs sometimes the trampyist thing when it gets all knotted.

I do still make an effort but TBH I wish I had a more slutty look when I was younger. I had a fab body (didn't realise at the time) and I should have worn more mini skirts/hot pants/ crop tops etc.

MabelStark · 12/02/2009 17:30

I too wish that I had dressed in a more sluttish manner when I had the figure, was thwarted in this by my Mother who when I was leaving the house dressed up to the nines would say, "Tits or arse Mabel - not both"

georgiemum · 12/02/2009 17:30

Who said 'youth is wasted on the youing'?

mrshamiltiongiles · 12/02/2009 17:34

so what should i do then? dress up a bit more?

I looked like shit in my 20's and early 30's

I am fab now!

Janos · 12/02/2009 20:49

Hmmmm, I look far better now than I did in my teens/early 20s! Am mid thirties now.

That's down to more confidence though I think.

Looking back at pics though I was pretty foxy. Just didn't realise it!

dancingonmice · 12/02/2009 20:55

I wish I'd known how to wear clothes that fitted me. I used to wear everything several sizes too big and had no one to put me straight.

Janos · 12/02/2009 21:09

Oh you are not alone dancingonice. My dress sense was absolutely APPALLING.

Fashion sense/style has only appeared in my 30s

solidgoldbullet4myvalentine · 12/02/2009 21:11

My dress sense has never bothered me. The number of people it shocks/annoys/amuses suggests that I'm probably doing something right, though. (I get a lot of unsolicited fashion advice which always boils down to 'why can't you dress like other people?' The answer is: I don't fucking want to.)

Janos · 12/02/2009 21:16

Good for you solid. What a refreshing attitude .

Janos · 12/02/2009 21:16

Urgh that sounds patronising. Not meant to.

Ah..Now when referring to myself I mean bag lady!

TrillianAstra · 12/02/2009 21:20

I thought you meant tarty raather than 'a mess'. And was going to reply that when you are young is the best time to walk around wearing a skirt that's shorter than your coat so it looks like you don't have a skirt at all (girl walking near 6th form college this afternoon).

I live in jeans.

And am very envious of anyone with nice legs who can wear a mini/micro skirt and get away with it!

Monkeygi · 12/02/2009 22:13

Oh dear. If trampy means ponytail (maybe with scraggly ends sticking out at odd angles?), no make-up and grungy clothes then that means me most of the time. (Not today though. I put make-up on today. Ds2 barely recognised me.) I've never worn much make-up though, even when young- but when I was younger I had lovely skin (ahh, hindsight. What a wonderful thing) and also rather a good figure.
I was a 'goth' for a short while though.Tee hee. Spiky hair and heavy black eyeliner. And the one piece of (not really too)outrageous clothing- a grey string vest type t-shirt thing- STILL has my mother banging on about it and how I wasn't wearing a bra/vest/anything under it. (I was. I wore a bra. I wasn't a TART fgs! But it makes the story more shocking for her to relate.)

OrmIrian · 13/02/2009 19:26

Ha... janos I have fucking great legs! Unfortunately the rest of me lets me down

Janos · 13/02/2009 19:33

OrmIrian, I would LOVE to have great legs! I'm only wee and mine are short, short, short!

AnyFuckerForAShiteSoppyCard · 13/02/2009 19:39

I have long, skinny legs

Unfortunately, in my youth I was self-conscious and hated them so I hid 'em

Now I am too old to show 'em off

Janos · 13/02/2009 19:45

Well, I have nice boobs

Still of all you lot with long legs!
